I have been told by my a Veterinary Specialist that my lab has a partial ACL tear. Has anyone ever dealt with this type of injury to your dog? Surgery will be aprox 3600.00

Rodney
My lab had a partial tear for about six months, then the full tear. I had the TPL surgery done in March. The vet told me it takes about a year before he could run hard again. First two months were hard, he had trouble getting up and down. He is 8 years old so more of a around the house dog now.
I used Dr. Marcum in Frisco, he was about 2500.00, for the surgery. I think the meds were another couple of hundred dollars.

This happened to my best friends lab. He had the surgery done on his dog and then the next year had to do the other leg. He's got $6K invested in a dog that's not worth anything. He also has to lift that giant out of the truck when he takes him anywhere.
If it were me I'd get a new pup to start training on and put the other dog down when he can't function. It costs the same to feed a healthy dog as it does to feed a crippled one.

Rex is part of the family. Putting him down is not an option.

If that's the case, just get the surgery and let him rest up before next season. Dogs are hardy creatures, surgery is well worth the money on a good retriever.

That is tough news and I pray that there is a speedy recovery.
If you want a second opinion or want to really understand the surgery and recovery time, I recommend you see Dr. Ed Aycock of Lewisville North Animal Clinic. Being a long time retriever field trialer, I am sure he will offer you some good insight regarding this injury.

That price is pretty steep. $2400 in Austin. My pup was not out that long.
