What is the farthest distance you are willing to take a shot with a bow?

Depends on the distance you practice at and feel confident. For me personally 30 yards extremely
Comfortable.

Depends on the animal

I killed a pronghorn at 86 but no way would I try that on a whitetail.

If I had a good shot I might try on a mule deer or elk

30-35 for me. I can stack arrows up to 50 yards, but lot's of variables come into play past 30 and the room for error gap increases way too much.

I saw Nick Mundt on Bone Collector stick an arrow through both hindquarters on a BIG buck. Didn't look more than 30 yards. I hope you guys shoot a lot better than these TV dbs.

For me the comfortable range is 25 yards or closer. I can shoot comfortably out to 30-35 at paper but would not take the shot at just any deer. Those ranges are the same for bow or crossbow for me. My bow is not the fastest and crossbow is a bit louder. I can read the deer's body language well enough to know whether to shoot him or wait.

My furthest shot was 25 yards. I would put a max of 30 yards on myself and that's the MAX. I practice to 40 or 50 and I will take the closest I can get.

Just like with a gun, there are people who shoot better at 300 yards than I do at 75, there are people who shoot better at 50 than I do at 15. Keep yourself within your capabilities and you should be fine.

So many variables on long range bow shots make it tough.

If I had my choice I like them right around the 20 yard mark.

I've seen great shots drill one at 70 then whiff one at 30

I've missed some chip shots and hit a few Hail Marys

Just like using a rifle it is your comfort level and what the animal doing? 40yrd is my limit and prefer it to be half that.

OK, good question if you are a novice bow hunter. All good responses above but just so you know, you are going to have to track and find that deer you just arrowed. You put a razor sharp broad head through the boiler room you should have a kill and an excellent trail to track. The worse your shot the less likely a kill and the harder it is to track.

So if you can track like a blood hound go ahead and take that long shot. If you are developing your tracking skills, may want to stay at 20 yards max broadside on a deer that is not on full alert. Best of luck to you and hope you fill your tags.

The question should be how close can you get!! up
For me, 7 steps. It's not how far I can shoot, but how close I can get.
But, my longest kill shot is 32yds. Next is 25. Every thing else has been 20 or less, on average, 15yds.

My feeders are set up at 25 yards. 20 yard pin in front and 30 yard pin in back of the feeder. That is where I stay. I can take 40 to 50 yards but never had to and really don't want to.

This is my first year with a crossbow and I am confident out to 30 yards but my plan this year is 20-25 yards.

Don't know if you have added a few things to your Excalibur crossbow to quiten it down some but they have addressed the noise some with a few additions. They are still loud with them but a few silencing things do help a lot when all used together. Air Breaks, Break pads, R.E.D.S and the good old Beaver Balls added will help a lot when used together. I prefer shots less than 30 yards and 20 is even better, closest so far is 7 yards longest with a vertical bow is 37. Crossbow 40 yards. Hogs I will step it on out as they do not seem to be as bad at reacting to the shot and they are hogs after all.

I have most of those on there along with LimbSavers products to try to help the noise of the Excalibur but it still limits my shots to 25 yards due to noise. They have helped but still not like some of the other xbows.

Know what you mean on the Excaliburs being loud even with all the stuff on them. Quietest crossbows from a single manufacture I have shot are the ones from Darton. Toughest crossbows though has to go to the Excalibur.

For deer, I like my 20 and 30 yard pins. I'll go to 40 on deer, but not any farther. As some have indicated, it is smart to practice at a farther distance than you are willing to shoot an animal. It will make you a better shot.

35 with my compound and 15 with my recurve. Prefer 20 and under.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.
