I'm about to start working with my dog on finding/tracking a decoy with bird scent. What commands do u guys use for finding a dead bird compared to when it's time to point and flush live ones?

It usually goes something like this...."Get your happy a-- in here and hunt dead". "look dead".

Haha. Thanks guys. Gonna see how he does this evening with the scents for the first time. Hoping instincts kick in.

Dead or hunt dead. I also use the command for treats. I start out using it with hotdog training.

This is a great point to the OP. I've had much better luck over the years training "dead" with treats, etc than I have with bird scent on dummies, not to mention it's way cheaper! You are essentially training the dog to "search" for something... once they associate the command "dead" with finding something good with their nose, they hone right in on it regardless of what it is.

I can drop a Cheeto on the floor in the kitchen and call my dog in and tell him dead and he'll search the entire kitchen until he finds it. I can also ask him where his ball is and tell him "dead" and he will scour the backyard until he finds it. If we are hunting birds... that's what he finds.

Make it a game with the pup.

^^^This^^^ I started with actual dead birds... but I think starting with a treat would probably work better for the reason they mentioned above. My command is "Hunt it up" if I can walk the dog up to the spot. If the cover is too thick or the bird is too far, I just send them on a blind with "back."

For starting off, make sure to take into account wind direction to help them be successful.

Thanks guys. He's great at "find the ball" and "where's your bone" things like that already. This is a 7yr old dog so I know I have my work cut out for me. Just wanted ideas of something different to use when introducing wings and scented decoys.

This is what I used on pointers from when I was 14 years old. On my Cockers I have now I use find it. They act like they can understand English. LOL
