One of the guys on the lease brought 6 new barrels up. The look like standard 55gal drums. But for whatever reason our funnels arent fitting them. Have any of you had this happen and know of different funnel that might vary in size?

Not all barrels are 55 gallons, some are couple of gallons less. Some are a different dimensions also. I know they make a tapered drum that is a bit taller and tapers to a bit smaller diameter bottom so they could stack them inside each other for shipping/storage.

The funnels I have bought were adjustable, they came in a flat box, when you take them out they form a funnel with screw holes for adjusting the size. That is my experience.

Sounds like what you have are actually what they call juice drums. They are slightly narrower and longer. You likely won't get a metal funnel to fit unless you cut and overlap it. But, you can get a plastic funnel to go if you fight hard enough.

Been there, learned that lesson the hard way.

I would think you have the heavier one piece funnel and make one cut from the outside edge/lip all the way to middle/the outer edge of the top of the throat of the downspout. That will allow enough play/slack for you to get it down into the barrel and then use self taping screws to hold it together and in place. I have taken a piece of round wood dowel about and 1" in diameter and hammered/forced a full one piece heavier funnel into a slightly narrower drum one time(I also used a piece of PVC pipe as a drift pin to align the funnel downspout with hole in bottom of the feeder drum). Once you get it in place there is not taking out again unless you cut the drum away from it.

I have a feeder I built that works flawlessly with no funnel. confused2
Not really sure they are absolutely necessary.

A feeder will work without a funnel, but you have to make sure it is completely empty or clean it out every time you refill it. If you don't you will get bugs in your corn that is left around the edges in the bottom. After time they will make a mess and it can clog up your feeder. Those bugs will make it look like soured/wet corn and smell like it. We had the old Spincast feeders with the tapered plastic barrels on a ranch in the early 90's. They did not have a funnel and after a year or two I had to clean out everyone...that was over 25 of them. They all had clumps of molded/wet corn in the bottom around the feeder opening. It was nasty.

I just added one to a feeder Thursday. I notched from the edge to about 2 inches in along each of the six lines on the bottom. Made it fit just right. I used a chain saw to notch it because it was handy. I would expect a skil saw to work about the same.
