Love the gun and the hunting shots. Too much talking about crop damage.

.458 SOCOM has been my 'go to' hog gun for the last 7 years. With any decent shot placement it puts them down with authority.

Most often...I use a 405 grain soft point (Remington bulk bullet), but I also load 5-6 different 300 grain bullets if I expect longer shots.

You've probably already discovered there is a plethora of bullet choices in .458 caliber to choose from (if reloading). Anything from 100 grains (yes 100 gr.) up to 600 grains.

I see you got your 80 series all mucked out from its 'dunking'. Getting ready to snorkel mine.

Hold on just a second ....

Not a lot of 458 Socom night hunters mainly due to lack of warranty and options with that recoil.

We're talking pricey scopes and I betcha there are less than 3 manufacturers who would warranty for that caliber.

What scope did you use? Warranty or specs cover that caliber? Link?

Also of note - you have to watch what muzzle brake you select , my personal example is a photonXT that I had dialed in on a radical firearms 458 that comes from the factory with the recoil mitigation brake and then I changed brakes and that caused the scope to shutoff after every shot .

So it isn't all so easy with the 458 Socom and not much info out there on which scopes work and are warranted....

This space is For Sale - inquire within ...

Good points the thermal is a Armasight/Flir Zeus pro 50mm they are rated up to 50BMG recoil. For muzzle brake I use the Bowers Verse 458 suppressor tames the muzzle climb while keeping it quiet.

Good points to raise. I was wondering the same thing myself.

In TLM's case...his choice of Thermal is suited to the recoil of the rifle, but many others would not be.

Most 300 grain loads for the 458 SOCOM are not that bad, some can be a bit 'sharp' if loaded at the upper end. When you get up to 350-400 grain bullets (and above) AND load them to 'max' then yes...recoil is noticeable but not different than certain 12 ga. shotgun loads.

Yeah, well I just like the 3 seconds before and after the kill shot… stir rifle banana

Although it would undoubtedly get old to put it in every video, I found the discussion of crop damage interesting. Of course, there's some farm property in the family so I've pretty much seen it before, but it's something to which I can relate.
