I've had this 6' trailer axle for almost a year now for a utility trailer build. Finally making myself work on it during the weekends to get it finished. The trailer is going to be a 6x12 with a 2' dovetail. I'm going to go with a steel floor and the rails on the sides will have some pockets for runners so we can load and unload full sheets of steel with the forklift.

The outer frame is 2x3x10GA tubing, with 1.5x3x10GA tubing for the crossmembers.

Dovetail is at a 7 degree angle, shouldn't have many issues with dragging the [censored] but I'm going to fully enclose the lights anyhow in case.

Awesome! up

What's your axle rating? I had a homemade steel trailer about the same specs and it was too heavy for the axle in that about half of the axle's capacity was used up supporting the weight of the trailer.

It's a 3500 lb axle. Trailer weight will be less than 1,000 lbs so no problem with overloading it. The most weight this thing will ever see would be a Polaris Ranger.

Got the tongue tacked up, I think that we're going to get the top rail set up before putting the axle under it. The deck has about 1/2" of deflection that I'm hoping to take back out with the top rail.

Now it's gonna sit in the corner till the weekend

Well, then how about you share with those of us that are "outside of the industry."

Please direct all insulation based questions to garrett@fluffyfetishes.org

Ordered two sheets of 5x8x11GA floor plate yesterday. I'll pick that up tomorrow along with the angle iron for the uprights of the rail. Top rail will be 2x2x11GA square tubing.

the rhino lining would look sharp, but I guess it depends on the main use of the trailer whether it'd be worth it or not. I dont think I would worry about it on a diamond plate floor...then again I'm cheap so whatever

Cut out a tacked up the tail light enclosures. 3/16" plate fully welded, I don't think I'll be able to knock em off.

Dang, Mike. Overkill? BTW, don't twist off those lug studs on that other trailer. I'll never hear the end of it. Use a torch and heat the dang thangs up. They'll come right off. But you know that already, you just wan't to twist them off so you can gripe at me forever.

Got to spend about 45 minutes on it this evening with the guys. We got all the uprights and top rails measured, cut and tacked on. I decided to make the top rail be flat across the whole length instead of following the dovetail, one big job for this one will be to load/unload steel sheets off of some runners up top so that's what will work best for me. I also need to figure out a way to make a pin-held support to attach to my zero turn, I want to be able to load it on, pin it in and go. No more straps for me!

I will weld them up over the weekend and take measurements for the floor to be cut on the plasma table.

Got the jack welded in, tubing and pipe clips for running the lighting, and 10' of the floor welded in today. Still have to design and weld up the fenders, I'm not liking any that I'm finding for sale anywhere.

Very nice work! Ok I got sucked in what's the insulation deal. I been in the metal construction business several years and have no clue what he's talking about.

Garrett was just being stoopid, he always asks me about insulating fire boxes on smokers. I finally insulated one for my dad as a Christmas gift this year to shut Garrett up.

Pretty close to done, yesterday we fabbed up the gate and hung it as well as the latches. A few weeks ago I cut the fenders out of 11 gauge floor plate, my 300 lb [censored] can stand on them without flexing. All that's left is the light enclosures, hookup points, and drilling some holes for running lights and she's ready for paint. Going this week to get it registered.

The tailgate is 2x2x11GA on the borders, 3x2x3/16 angle for the lip that touches the ground, and crossmembers are 2x2x14GA on 12" centers. I used the same heavy duty raised expanded metal that we use on our wood grates on grill and smokers, it won't ever need replacing from bending!

You're screwing with my OCD, the 12 is fine but the 20 doesn't fit. You need a 24 to split the difference between the 16 & 32

I understand. I used to pull, and back, a 20' gooseneck loaded with skidsteer and implements. It can be placed surgically, anywhere, and wasn't a heavy trailer, just handy! I had a 24'gooseneck, and it's long enough that I might as well use my 32'. But my 32' is 7k empty. That's why I want a 20' gooseneck, just don't always need the length and capacity of the 32' and the trailer is easier to maneuver and weighs less.

BP, this is "fireman" you're talking about, he will build a 12'er with an 8' pull out extension with a couple of drop down axles grin

Just messing with ya bud... Mainly because you're messing with my OCD... And because you're a fireman bolt

cheers

Light enclosures welded up, I'm gonna have to trim out a little for the reverse lights to fit flush.

Didn't get to add the last couple things, but I've got some dog kennel panels to haul to west tx this weekend so she got a coat of paint and wired up.

yup oddly enough the company made more than one set!

Going to pick up tags today or tomorrow. I picked flat tan because a) I had it, b) I thought it was different, and c) it's the same color as the mud where we're moving.

Digging the reverse lights. Wish all my trailers had them. However, I can't imagine the amount of mud your light bracket is going to catch. up

There's no way we could build these to sell and compete with the big boys. I haven't done the math on this one but if I had to guess I would have to sell it for $2750 to turn a profit

Ramball, what load capacity latches did you use on the gate? I've been thinking about putting some of those on my small trailer (12ft).
