Working on a project for an outdoor retailer and wanted to turn to this community to gain some insight. Any and all answers are appreciated.

I'm simply trying to understand the reaction towards the name of a store that carries a wide array of sporting goods and apparel but also has a strong focus on the outdoors, namely hunting and fishing.

Let's call it Joe's but the owner is trying to decide if it should be "Joe's Outdoors", "Joe's Sporting Goods" or "Joe's Athletics".

Few questions to consider, feel free to answer one, all, none or just offer any general thoughts.

1. Does one resonate more with you than the other? Which one and why?
2. What does the word "Athletics" conjure up in your mind?
3. Could a predominantly outdoor-focused retailer call itself an Athletics store?
4. Do hunters consider themselves athletes? Outdoorsmen? Both?

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

Just my opinion, but to me,
-"Joe's Outdoors" makes me think of something like Cabela's or Bass Pro
-"Joe's Sporting Goods" makes me think of football, baseball, basketball, soccer, etc.
-"Joe's athletics" makes me think of the same as Sporting Goods.

What you described here I think of Academy "Sports and Outdoors"...so kind of a combo of athletics, hunting & fishing.

To answer you questions:
1. See above
2. Baseball, soccer, football etc.
3. IMO, no.
4. Outdoorsmen

IMO, if the main focus is outdoors, I would roll with something along those lines. Athletics and Sporting Goods make me think of sports (golf/soccer/tennis/baseball), not hunting/fishing. You can easily advertise those other aspects but the name should denote your main intent. Few things grind my gears more than shops called 'The Great Outdoors' and the most outdoor thing they have is wool socks. Likewise, I would not begin to suspect 'Joe's Athletics' carrying anything remotely outdoorsy. Truth in advertising.

What ZK said, again.
Of your 3 choices given, Joe's Sporting Goods is closest for the all around.

To me, hunting is not a sport. Athletics are a sport.

"Joe's Athletics" = Weight lifters, swimmers, track and fielders, ball players, etc.

"Joe's Outdoors" = Hunting, fishing, camping, kayaking... people who actually see somewhere besides the ball field, stadium, or gym.

"Joe's Sporting Goods" Jack of all trades, master of none. Better have good prices. The name itself encompasses far too broad of a spectrum to really know what they specialize in. I.e. "Dicks Sporting Goods", or "Academy Sports and Outdoors." That's the kind of place a husband and wife will shop together, maybe on opposite sides of the store together, but neither will complain about the trip. Probably bring the rug rats so they can look at baseball gloves or soccer cleats while they're there. But when the husband wants to go blow a paycheck on his upcoming hunting or fishing trip, he's going to go to the place that specializes in it, like Bass Pro for fishing or Cabela's for hunting.

Back in the mid/late '50's there was a mom & pop live bait & bullet store on the southern edge of Dallas on Hwy 77, now I-35 south, with the best hunting anf fishing store name I ever saw, with 13 years selling to this market segment in 5 states ...called " Ketch'um & Kill'um " ... Not very PC, but GOT the message across with a head turner of a name that WAS FOR SURE memorable...Just Sayin' smile

Cabela's was just two brothers last name, now it's the biggest name in outdoors shopping. Their marketing gave their name meaning. Everyone who hunts knows what Cabela's is and what they have. You might not shop with them, but you know who they are.

You can call it anything you want, but there is some advantage to getting the name right when first starting out. I personally think using the first name is a mistake. Nobody knows Joe, and nobody is going to put much interest into a business based on Joe's name. Drop Joe from it and come up with something creative that reflects the outdoors that catches the eye and is easy to remember. I'm not a marketing guy, but I do believe that marketing is very important, and a good name for a company is very important.

I agree with Eddie. If he will maily be selling and distributing hunting and fishing stuff while also selling stuff for sport, name it somethin like "The Great Outdoors" or "Outdoor Emporium". For the most part, sports are played outdoors so i wouldnt worry about turning away the sporting crowd by goin with an "outdoors" name

you should be able to call it joe's sporting goods
since things like golf and football and such are
really games and not sports. if you're not going
to sell stuff like soccer crap (you couldn't compete
against big box stores anyway) just use joe's hunting
and fishing supplies, or joe's outdoor gear.
i'd love to see a store with no baseball crap and no
casual clothes, etc. and just hunting and fishing
and camping gear. i could go in to buy things i want
and not have to wade through a bunch of folks buying
$200.00 tennys for their screaming kids.

"Joe" is going to want his business to stand out to outdoorsmen and women more so than to team sports or golf ect. but still not limit his customer base. "Joe's Outdoor and Sports Center", "Texas Outdoor and Sports Center", Joe's Great Outdoors and Sports". Either name or similar would get my attention.
