Yes been to the matador several times. It a great place to hunt, but it is a tough hunt. They do not allow baiting so it's more of a spot and stalk hunt. If you have ever hunted western Style mule deer you will do fine. you will see pleatyof deer in almost all compartments, you just have to work for them. Congrats on the draw and good luck on the hunt.

If you would went 4 years ago when you got drawn then you'd have it figured out for us.

Hunted there last year on GDE hunt, my buddy and I both killed nice bucks. We could've killed our does but we didn't see a whole lot of whitetail so we stuck with bucks only. Like Erny said it is a great hunt but a very tough hunt. I will put in for that hunt every year from now on. Spot and stalk works ok but what worked best for us was finding active trails and areas, setting up on a vantage point and still hunting. Take a good game cart with you to help get your deer out. They do have a cold storage walk in cooler there at headquarters that they let us store our deer in which was nice. The matador is in the middle of nowhere, closest town is Paducah, decent motel there, The Hunters Lodge. I would suggest taking food and cooking your meals, especially your evening meal...theres only 2 little cafes in town and they close at dark. The one right by the motel has the best food but they closed up early in the evening. Hope this helps!!! Good Luck!!!

What distance should we expect for shots?

308, 25-06 or 243?

Should be ready for any distance. I was mule deer hunting there a few years ago and while I was glassing the area, before traveling through it on foot, a nice 10 pointer walked 40 yards from me and started raking his horns against a small mesquite tree. Never would have guessed that would be how it was going to go down. Anyways, just stay within your shooting limits, only take responsible shots and be alert. Also, there aren't any deer there. I shot the last one.

There were deer at all ranges when I hunted there. And yes, there are no deer left at Matador. Nothing but hoot owls and polecats. No need to apply.

Yes, I saw a few groups of hogs and shot a decent sow.

I had a buddy that had a lease around Childress. He said there were a lot of hogs on it.

We are getting ready for this hunt. 2 weeks away.

I called the lady at Matador and she confirmed that we get to select our compartment 2nd.

After talking with a few members who have been there, we are thinking Lone Canyon as our 1st choice and if it gets taken 1st then we are thinking South Middle.

Anyone agree or have any other info to let us in on? We made these choice by looking at their food plats and wind mills versus the info that a couple others have given us.

Again, we are just doe hunting but want to have the best chances of shooting WT does and hogs.

I have hunted both the south middle and the far southwest corner. We saw more deer in the far southwest corner. But that was 10 years ago.
