Hey all,

I live on 5 acres in Garland, we have horses, a longhorn, and I have bird dogs as well. Our neighbor doesn't keep place mowed very good at all and about 8 months ago we started hearing coyotes pretty frequently. I was pretty sure it was 2-3 adults with a den of pups. Well, now we've started seeing them very frequently, as in 3-4 times a week. They're digging under our fence and coming into our back pasture. What really worries me is that they aren't scared of humans at all. Last Saturday I was in the back pasture cutting a tree down with a chainsaw, I look up and 2 of them are standing 50ft from me just watching me. I can walk over to the fence line and see them in our neighbors back pasture just laying around at least 3x a week. I've called animal control and they won't do anything. If this was 15 miles east of Garland, I would've taken them out already, but there are quite a few houses around us. I've seen up to 3 adults and 4 pups at once (they're getting big though), does anybody have a suggestion of a trap I can put out that wouldn't affect my dogs or horses? I've thought about setting up a snare on the fence line in the holes they're coming through? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You could trap one but you'll still need to shoot it. I live have them on my land and I don't want to kill them so I shoot them with a pellet gun and they get smart real quick. I'd think that's your easiest and best solution. Otherwise lock the dogs up and set a coil spring trap. Whack em over the head.

Snares (when properly set) can be very effective. Of course, they are non-selective...so measures must taken to discourage other animals from getting into them. Anything that can (or is likely to) go under your fence in that location...could end up in a snare.

Coyotes and Hogs are the most likely thing to go under your fence...but your dogs (or neighbors dogs) could do so as well.

If you literally have Coyotes in your pasture at distances of less than 40 yards...I would use a shotgun with #1 buckshot and lay them down (provided shooting is allowed where you live). Just contact your neighbors and let them know what is going on.

Anything you can do to put pressure on Coyotes will keep them off of your property, they respond quickly to a perceived threat. When allowed to just roam unmolested..is when they become emboldened and become a problem.

Bow hunt them or get a good friend that can. Should be able to get them all from a tree stand. Check local ordinances first.

Do you have a bow? Or a suppressed 22?

If your worried about your dogs don't use snares, choke your dog as fast as that coyote. Coil springs you can walk over an let them out no problem. A dog doesn't fight the trap like a coyote does, and shouldn't have any damage. But if your really worried about it that bad shoot em and say they were chasing your dogs. You should have a right to protect your property. I think If it were me they would of all been dead, SSS

At the ranges you're talking about, and in the urban area it sounds like you're in, the air gun approach is the best. As pointed out, 'yotes catch on very quickly, and catching a few pellets and seeing you with a gun, they'll put 2 + 2 together, decide that you're a threat, and figure there are better places to hang out. In most places, discharging air guns is legal within the city limits. To avoid any unpleasantness with your neighbor(s), I would advise you to let them know what you're doing so they don't call the police when they see you out and about with your pellet gun.

You could put in a good, high powered single strand of high tensile electric fence wire low on the perimeter.

A couple of shots that made one of them dance a little bit seems to have done the trick. Haven't seen one since!

Keep the "hunting pressure" up and they'll stay away. They may venture to your side of the fence to test your resolve, so stay vigilant and armed for a while when you're out and about.

Good deal, like I said...anything you can do to pressure them will have an effect. They respond very quickly to a threat. Just be watchful and respond each time you see them, they will start avoiding your place.

Coyotes and Crows will both go 'around' your property if you put some 'heat' on 'em.
