We've been having a ton of pigs make the rounds at our lease over the past few weeks. We got a pattern on them so I went out last night to see if I could get one or possibly a few if they cooperated. On the way to my stand I could hear them just before I got to my buddies stand so I jumped in it and waited. The plan at that point was to see if the one I heard would come out and if not I was going to stay and wait on a text from our Spartan Wireless Cam to go off. I'd walk to mine and bust them there when I got the text. Anyway, I could hear them behind the stand then off in the slough beside me and basically everywhere except where I could shoot! About an hour later and a bunch of sweat (95 outside and I'm in a metal box blind) I see him walk across the road. I get the gun ready and can hear him behind where the feeder is. He then sprints across the road so I'm thinking please walk by again. Well he did and I take the shot. He ran about 20 yds and died. I think I was just about half dead from heat exhaustion too! I just finished my new 6.8 build so I haven't had a chance to sight it in yet. This was with my .223 using a Barnes 62 gr TTSX. I've been thoroughly impressed with it. I plan on loading some 95 gr TTSX for the 6.8 as soon as my brass gets in this week.

That was at 7:20pm last night. I took the peephole cover out of the front of the Photon XT and never turned on the IR Flashlight. At dusk you get a really great view just by removing the cover which has to come out at night anyway. I've really been impressed with the Photon. It doesn't have all the fancy bells and whistles that the ATN advertises, but when I turn it on it works which is what I wanted.

Nice! I have been contemplating getting a photon XT as a back up/second shooter gun, you are seriously tempting me now...

Nice! I have been contemplating getting a photon XT as a back up/second shooter gun, you are seriously tempting me now... Last thing I want it to be doing is fumbling around looking for the right button in the dark. Power is on the back of the IR illuminator and that's it. For someone(second shooter) not familiar with the weapon its got an easy learning curve. When I get a thermal, I will keep mine for a second shooter.

Nice! I have been contemplating getting a photon XT as a back up/second shooter gun... Once you have been using thermal, it is very, very hard to go back to digital. I had the same thoughts once, but went the second thermal route (and third, fourth, fifth, etc.). If it were your younger son, I could get that, but otherwise I think you'll end up with buyers remorse. My .02 anyway...

Thanks guys. I've really enjoyed getting out in the woods and doing this over the course of the last few months. For years all I did was fish, but over the last year or so I got back into hunting a lot more. That was my first solo trip so it was definitely different being out there alone.
I just saw where Brownells is offering the Photon for $449 until 9/30/16. If SlickGuns still has it for $350 then that's one heck of a deal.
