This weekend is open for youth only squirrel so we're headed out! Any suggestions on camping ect? Never been there and the whole family is tagging along for the ride. Mom, Dad, daughter and son.

Any hogs in the area? Website said we had to register so left a message on Mr Chavez voice mail. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Just got off the phone with the Game Warden....he said hogs are open to youth as well as squirrels. Here is a quick link to the locations info...

We had a super late start arrived to the "hunters camp" at aroundp 230pm. We walked for 1.5 miles in on a well "beat down" path. We didn't see anything! Not one squirrel...nada! My kids had a great time. My only gripe is there are no signs anywhere. Maybe because that was my time there that's just the way it is. No clear markings of where you are. We are for sure headed back in the near future.

Did you go up north of Honey Grove or by Ladonia ? You go up by Honey Grove and walk the creeks you will find the squirrels.

In some areas I think Squirrels tend to run in population cycles. I seem to remember it is usually something like a peak every 5 to 7 years. I'm not sure if it is related to the cycles of mast producing trees or the squirrels themselves. But Squirrels like rabbits, crappie, and a few other animals tend to run in population cycles. I have hunted areas where it seemed like there was a squirrel in every tree all season, then go back three years later on the same week of the year, same weather, and see almost none. And vice versa. Caddo grasslands is one of those places.

We parked at hunter camp number 7 in Caddo National Grasslands Bois d’Arc Unit. Walked about 1 hour down a well walked path. Question number 1....how can I navigate the "area" once we park? My cell signal was horrible so it didn't give me very much map detail on google maps.

Thanks

I hunt there all the time for squirrels.Stay close to the lakes and the "wet" trails and you'll find them.I have one of those handheld GPS to mark my location and track back. That place is huge and you can get turned around in there.

Choot 'em!

go to google maps and configure Offline Maps. this will let you define and download maps data for areas on your phone, so when you lose data signal, maps can still display (assuming you are using GPS on your phone, if you are relying only on cell signal for location then obviously it will fail).

open google maps
pull up the menu (your places, timeline, etc.)
select offline areas
select custom area
select area, you can shrink, grow and move the box
click download

* if you don't set the map to auto-update, it will be deleted after a time. auto-update will refresh over wi-fi periodically.
* you can create multiple custom areas, so you can make one for Bois d'Arc, and another for Ladonia unit or whatever. Smaller than picking ONE area that covers all the space in between.
*google maps will cut over to downloaded maps automatically if needed.

I have several areas saved on my phone and I think it uses 300 or 400 mb total.

This weekend is opening for bow hunting deer. Can you imagine us walking around with shotguns? We are going to sit out for awhile.

Did you camp at one of the lakes? It's nice out there, in my opinion. And yes you can get turned around and cell service is nearly nonexistent. I carry a compass if I'm going to do any "off" trail hiking. And every time I go over there I'm being harassed by squirrels. Usually it's a little later and colder though...and early mornings. Good luck and let us know how you do!

Mmmm Hmmm

Anyone been around the Ladonia unit lately? I went out Friday to call coyotes and had no luck. I suspect all the deer hunters have spooked things up.
