Am I the only gun hunter who hunts out of tree stands or tripods?? It seems like 99% of the gun hunters hunt out of box blinds and me personally I am not a fan of box blinds because I like the added challenge of being out in the open if that makes any sense. Hopefully next season I will be bow hunting if everything goes right

My guess would be that about 75-80% of gun hunters hunt out of a box. 90% of my deer/hog hunting consist of walking around until i find a spot i want to sit, or get tired and decide to sit at the base of a tree.

I grew up hunting from a "tree stand," aka a 2x4 nailed between a limb and a trunk. Go kill a deer with a rock and get back with me. Just sayin'.

There are more of those who use tripods and tree stands than you think. With deer leases being so expensive, some prefer stands that can be taken down if and when needed. Tripods are also very mobile and offer the height advantage not found with ground blinds.
Box stands are clearly for those looking for the greatest convenience and protection from the weather. Some are honest in their view of them and call them what they truly are - shooting houses.

Wheew!!! The good ol' days kinda' sucked! Yes and no. Yes, we saw fewer deer, but when we did see one, we didn't fear if it met some standard. The entire hunting community knew how much time, effort, and knowledge was required to get a shot at one. A person can kill a trophy today with all the knowledge and effort it takes to pop open a beer can and light a cigarette.

Of coarse your not the only one. If you want a challenge stop using a feeder and get out and spot and stalk It requires thinking outside the box, but one can only imagine the potential impact on the age structure of bucks in low fence areas if you removed feeder hunting while keeping antler restrictions in place. It would seem logical the increased difficulty, combined with AR's, would cause the number of older and better bucks to soar.

I don't care to re-live the "good old days" sitting out in the weather. Got me a nice fiberglass blind nowadays. To each his own.

It would seem logical the increased difficulty, combined with AR's, would cause the number of older and better bucks to soar. After a NFS biologist shared photos of deer taken off the Davy Crockett during the past few years, the impact of AR's combined with more restrictive hunting methods points to what might be a very well kept secret by those who hunt the area. You must keep in mind that about the same time AR's were implemented in East Texas, it became illegal to use bait in the DC and other public lands. My apologies if I just alerted others to someone's honey hole.

I hunted out of a tripod for about 9-10 yrs straight for archery and rifle season from the mid 90's till about 2006. I still use a tripod in archery season. I like the portability of a tripod once I find deer in an area. I like them for hunting mature bucks during the rut and using one to rattle from also.

I was also a tree stand hunter for most of my life. I have 4 feeders and 4 box blinds however i also have 3 tripods 2 12' and 1 15' and on my only suitable tree a tree stand out of which I have shot most of my deer. Field of view is so much better in the air

Box blind, ground popup, tree stand, tripod stand, vehicle (where allowed), spot and stalk, cellular, and sometimes just sitting under a tree.

Whitetail hunting is easy. Why else would so many go to such great effort (and expense) to make it more difficult?
