Hypothetically would you rather spend a season seeing multiple deer per sitting/daily with semi-frequent bucks among them or much fewer deer, maybe none for multiple sittings if you had the chance by year-end to see/shoot a mature, wall hanger? I know this one has been out there many times but it's been awhile, what say the forum? And no, they are mutually exclusive scenarios..

Well, there's no guarantees. If I don't see deer then I get a bored and antsy. I like to have something to watch even if it's not something I want to shoot. Now, if you could guarantee that I'd shoot a wall hanger, but have to endure hours of no action, then maybe I'd go for it.

I like to see deer. I have hunted ranches where you see 3-5 deer a sit but the quality of deer is higher. To me thats boring. I would rather see 50+ deer a sit. Its tough to find a good balance but when you do you will have a jewel.

After spending my first twenty hunting years in the piney woods where I'd be looking to see one maybe two deer a trip I prefer seeing deer. I've seen as many as 20 bucks in a single morning hunt and although none were shooters seeing that many was a real rush!

No. They are not mutually exclusive. I prefer and manage for both.

I'd rather have quality. We are blessed to have both quality and numbers where I hunt now.

Put me in the quality camp. I haven't shot a buck bigger than a spike since 2012 and a doe or 2 a year, I'm patient enough to wait for a good one. Our property isn't big enough to support enough mature quality deer for everyone to get one each year, but we don't mind waiting a few.
In the coming years when my little boy gets bigger ill go for more deer I'm sure! But like the rancher I think you can easily have an entertaining population of deer to look at with some good mature deer too.

If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

Never seen an antler I can eat and they pretty much end up gathering dust anyways. I hunt to fill a freezer. But I do think it is somewhat egotistical to say an animal is "quality" or not based solely on its headgear. All game animals are special from a sleek doe to a spindly spike to the bull of the woods. None of them are substandard "quality" in my book.

It just seems counter productive to me to even entertain the hypothetical that they are mutually exclusive. Planting erroneous seeds in the minds of impressionable young hunters.

If both feeders and food plots were illegal so that Texas hunters could not just sit back and wait on something to show up and eat, practically ANY deer seen, much less taken, would be considered a good one.

I used to hunt in east texas before AR's and the hunting pretty much sucked on the first place we leased. you saw a doe or two it was a good morning hunt. Very few bucks were ever seen. a year or so later we leased a much better place with good hardwoods and creek bottoms and the hunting was better, we saw 3-4 deer per sit but still seeing any buck was something you talked about when you got back to camp. We did see some nice bucks for the time period (130 class top end) but it was not an every weekend occurrence.
Started hunting in South Texas after that and I would see multiple bucks per sit with one or three min mature bucks being common place. one evening I counted 63 deer in an oat field
After hunting on places where I would see 10-30 deer per set its kind of hard going back to that. I have recently been hunting smaller low fence ranches where I am seeing 3-7 deer per sit and that's enough to keep me entertained
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

My my time is slipping away from you as you age, I shot that deer in Nov. of 2012 but I very fondly remember it

Yeah it really is.
I'll reference something in conversation that happened "the other day" that took place 9 or more months ago

To the OP, at this point in my career, it is both lol. If Im hunting a target buck, I couldnt care less about seeing any other deer no matter if it is all season long. If Im just out there "hunting" then I prefer seeing deer. How's that for a fence-line answer?

Since I primarily hunt with my kids and we primarily shoot does, I would much rather see quantity than quality. Having spent a couple of seasons where we saw nothing but the very occasional deer and having spent a couple of seasons where we would have 3 or 4 deer a sit, I've done both and prefer seeing deer to seeing empty land.
Thanks, Rich

That's just plain BS. Hunting in parts of Texas has always been excellent. Even before feeders and stands and fences. The hill country and south Texas have virtually always been eat up with deer.
