I just bought a Barnett Jackel crossbow this evening, have not even fired it yet
I have wanted a crossbow for a while now since I can't draw/hold a compound bow due to neck surgery
I am really excited to get this sighted in and be at my lease Oct 1
I know the Jackel is not top of the line, but seems to be a pretty good entry level crossbow
I think I am more excited about getting this than I was my rifle. Lol

I bought a Barnett Recruit recurve that Dick's had on sale. Both will do the job 30 yards and in. Make sure to watch some videos on upkeep. Several little nuances to keep them functioning correctly.

The 2 bows mentioned above are workhorse bows for the brands, solid choices.

Some maintenance things to keep up are
String and cables waxed
Rail lubed
grease the rail in there where the cable slides ride
Rust preventative on the screw heads so they don't rust

Brosdhead selection, get ones designed for crossbows.

Most important thing KEEP THOSE FINGERS BELOW THE STRING PATH WHEN SHOOTING.

I had a Barnett Jackel, it shot well initially but started throwing arrows all over. We discovered that the scope mount was not stable and the shots were very inconsistent as the scope moved around. We supported it somehow but I cannot remember what we did. Hopefully they fixed the issue on the newer ones.

And to repeat kmon1 "KEEP THOSE FINGERS BELOW THE STRING PATH WHEN SHOOTING."
My sister in law removed the top of her thumb by sticking it up in the string path; and I have heard of worse.

My dad broke his thumb, so for real keep them down!

Thanks for all the advice guys
I will most definitely keep my fingers out of the way

I already have it sighted at 20 yards, which will work fine at my lease
Now just need a few more practice sessions and I should be ready for Oct 1

Congratulations on your new crossbow. I shot one (a friend's) one time and it kind of unnerved me. They seem a little dangerous - not only the finger issue but the fact that you have a live cocked weapon in your tree with you at all times. I like not having my bow "loaded" until I pull it back!

Still, when the time comes (and it will) when I cannot pull back my compound bow anymore, I will definitely seriously get into the crossbow thing. I don't have any problem with anyone that uses one. They definitely have their place. At 53, I am probably getting much closer to using one than I would like to admit.

BTW - I was also shocked at how heavy the one I shot was. Granted this was about 5 years ago, but that dang thing was HEAVY!

That is a tough lesson to learn. I don't think it's stressed enough!
Also when you use the stirrup make sure you have your foot all the way into the stirrup and not just the tip of your shoe. If it ever slips out you'll understand what I'm talking about.
Crossbows can be more dangerous than a regular compound. Make sure you have clearance for your limbs to clear and snap forward when you shoot. If your crossbows limb hits something, the bows stock will slap you across the face and jaw and with enough force to loosen teeth or knock you out.
Be safe!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Glad I read this. I'll be hunting this year with a crossbow. I hadn't thought of the dangerous things to not do.
