A trail I cut through a thicket has deer traveling it multiple times a day and it's less than 100 yards from my feeder.
We all know feeders and corn don't always equal deer I also notice after we shred roads and senderos that the deer tracks seem to appear out of nowhere. They like walking down clean open paths as much as we do. Actually they also like to be able to eat closer to the ground where most of the smaller weeds and such are. Also probably like here they like to be able to see what is around them. I know my Ibex don't like tall stuff. I have to do a lot of shredding if the weeds or grass gets too tall. Maybe its just that you can see the tracks better when its been mowed?

Adolf Leupold was quoted as saying, "I don't hunt to kill, but kill to have hunted." He was someone who recognized the value wasn't in the wild animal itself, but in the pursuit of it. The greater and more difficult the pursuit, the greater the return.

Have never heard of "Adolf Leupold" but have heard of Aldo Leopold.

Same in ETX...the deer don't like the tall grass bc it's easier for the black panthers to hide in and ambush them. No question they are lazy and often choose the path of least resistance.

It is not that they are lazy, it is that they can not see very far in tall vegetation. Watch deer. They will usually follow paths except when alarmed. On the paths they feel safer.

I choose to differ Don. The low points or "saddles" in ridges that offer an easier route, points in fences where a tree has taken them down, and other places that permit easier travel, are all good places to setup a deer stand. In fact, deer can often be encouraged to follow certain routes by making it easier for them to cross a fence, ditch, or other obstacle. As for tall vegetation, deer prefer cover when traveling because it helps hide them from the eyes of predators. Through evolution, they have learned that predators don't chase prey they don't see.

Another meat hunter so the more the merrier.

"One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted...If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. Jose Ortega y Gasset, Meditations on Hunting
Yes, it is the quality of the hunt, rather than the animal, that still drives many of us.

If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.
