My buddy and I recently saw a bunch of catfish (that we didn't stock) in one of our ponds, and wanted to use a cast net to grab some and identify exactly what they were. We got a few and as we were about to leave my buddy saw a snake enter the water across the pond. Saw the marking and grabbed a rifle - at about 25-30 yards away we both hit it with a .22 open site rifle when it got closer to shore across from us. We walked around to the bank where it was and got a stick long enough to retrieve it. I had heard about rattlesnakes swimming but had never seen it before in person. This is a good fishing spot for the family, so no venomous snakes get a hall pass where the kids will be hanging out, or the adults for that matter!

Was not aware they venture that far out into the water for fish. Good information.

Yes, they are good swimmers and will not hesitate to cross a body of water.

You might have noticed how 'buoyant' they are and that they swim very much on top of the water (not unlike a Moccasin).

Wait till your wade fishing and one tries to swim up on you to get out of the water, like 300-400 yards from shore, not the funnest experience lol.

That's when you do your best duck imitation, you know....the one where you run across the top of the water before taking flight! wink

Yup, we had about a 4-5' come up on us while wade fish the rocks of Baffin Bay back in the mid 80s. We got into the boat and he got the wrong end of an oar. As said, they very much ride the waves and swim on top of the water..
