Do any of the young people ever learn to shoot with open sights anymore?

I'm betting you're joking but just in case "V" on top of the receiver and a blade on the end of the barrel, if you were in the military it was a ring on the receiver a post on the end of the barrel

Like paper & pencil have been made obsolete by calculators, open sights have been made obsolete by red dots and scopes. The thing is, I get the very distinct impression that many of the younger generations have absolutely no number sense due to having been allowed and even encouraged to use calculators.

The good news is that we know that iron sights along with paper & pencil are not really obsolete, nor extinct.

I made my daughter learn w/irons first (she's 13 now). Never know when that scope will break!

Three of my five daughters are fast and comfortable with open sights. The other two don't have any interest in shooting sports.

Every young person that I know (who have normal vision) hunt with iron sights inside of 100-150 yards, but prefer a scope further out in order to make an ethical kill. I support that position. I don't know any bird hunters who don't use open sights.

Bill, do you feel differently? Is that why you are asking this question?

Marc

All of my pistols and shotguns and several of my rifles wear irons.

Yessir, Bill. Teaching two of my youngest now to shoot in 22LR with an old Remington 33 with irons and a Marlin 100-S Tom Mix Special with irons both single shots. We go to the safe and pull them out regularly. We normally shoot 12 oz water bottles at 25 or 50 yards. Could pull either one out and do this first shot...

Pistols and shotguns. My rifles all have scopes or red dots.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

I only own 2 rifles that use open sights. One is a traditional lever action and the other is an AK. I dont really shoot either that much and I suspect it may have something to do with lack of optics. I enjoy seeing my bullet holes too much.

The other day I was at the range helping zero an AR10 with 14x, FFP, mil/mil scope and Win 94 30-30 with open sights. AR10 zeroed in 4 shots at 100yds no problem. Open sighted lever gun had to start at 25y and work way up so took way more ammo to get zeroed and windage was off but didnt have any tools to drift the rear.
