Do any of you know anyone in the dfw area that refinishes rifle stocks? Any idea what it'd cost?

Keep in mind that refinishing or rebluing a gun decreases its value. Just saying.

Not always, too many variables to make that statement always true.

Making it come out right is a slow process, with lots of elbow grease involved. Done right, it is going to be expensive enough that looking for another stock, or even another similar rifle is likely to be both faster and cheaper.

I am currently refinishing the stock on a rifle for a customer, and have put in a good number of hours into it. I guess I'm about three-quarters of the way done. This work is not going to be cheap.

On the other hand, I recently traded into a Winchester model 70 that had a stock that I was not too happy with... I looked around and found a NOS (New, Old Stock) Winchester Sporter stock for it online for around 250 bucks. I consider this to be a bargain.

If it were me, I'd look for a replacement stock, maybe even see what the manufacturer charges for one before I considered refinishing.

This assumes that you are not interested in a rattlecan or dip job, but want it to look pretty much like it did when it came out of the factory.

You never did mention what kind of rifle we are talking about, or what is wrong with the stock. If it is a Marlin model 60 for example, you might get off relatively easy on a refinish.

I've done a few stocks for different members. If you've just got an old wood stock that would want sanded down, surface scratches removed, and refinished, I can do it. If you want it done to an heirloom kind of quality, I don't get in to that kind of stuff.

just curious, why don't you do yourself,( no disrespect intended) if its the checkering, I can understand that, even that's not hard with the right tools.

Once again, that's not always the case depending on the collector, make, condition pre-refurbish/refinish, etc...
There are guns out there that would raise in value from a top notch restoration. Likewise a novice restoration on an already inexpensive and common gun may lose value, the money invested in refinishing won't be seen upon selling. On the flip side I've seen $2000-$5000 invested into high end English guns that sold for far more than what they were purchased at in rough condition. The work was top notch though.

The rifle is a Browning BBR 270. First, you can't find a replacement stock. They quit making these rifles in 1984 I think. I snapped the original stock, which was in perfect shape, about 8 years ago and it took me three years to find a used, very used, replacement stock. As for me doing it, I've done a couple of stocks and both came out great but they didn't have checkering and this one does and since it's going to my SIL I want it done so that it looks like it's brand new. I've found a guy that refurbishes old wood furniture that I'm considering using to do this. He explained his process, has great ratings, and indicated he's done other stocks before so mine wouldn't be his first and he told me he'd do it for $125.00
