Looking for a value on a Winchester 1873 in 32-20, it's the shorter carbine with octagon barrel. The condition is pretty average I guess, it's no show piece. Just looking for ballpark number

Pictures would help.
If it were mine, I would look at pictures of similar guns on the online auction sites, see what guns of the same general age and condition are going for.
The next step would be to pay to have it appraised.

serial number? If it's a '73 short rifle you might have a very saught after model.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I would suspect that it may have been cut. If it is a true 32/20 short rifle, it is easy enough to tell. The location of the magazine retaining band and forearm length are the indicators. As noted above, it would be quite rare, if correct.

Well, first off, how long is the barrel? Second, how far is it from the end of the barrel to the magazine retaining band?
