I'm not much of a target poster, but color me impressed with the new 30-06 RAR's first trip to the range. Here are the particulars:

RAR 30-06, $179 special from Wally World
Tract Toric UHD 3-15x42 plex
Federal Power Shock 165 gr SP blue box
Federal Power Shock 180 gr SP blue box

I went through the process of mounting the new Toric, torqued the Warne's to 25", and applied dyna bore coat because I like the stuff. I let it cure overnight for a total of about 18 hours. This is the results of my bore sighting, "curing/centering" shots, and very minor adjustments. This was NOT a scope tracking test in any form or fashion.

Here's what it looks like mounted up.....

After bore sighting at 25 yds firing 2 shots, I hung the target at 100yds, fired the first shot with the 165gr ammo and hit high (shot 1). Adjusted scope down what I was guessing the proper amount and fired shots 2,3. Adjusted right 6 clicks for shots 4,5,6. I then shot the right target with the 180gr ammo, firing shots 1,2,3,4 that hit just below the bull. Adjusted 10 clicks up and fired shots 5,6,7. Looks to be rather promising.

Can't beat that with a stick. Cheap and effective.

Good shooting. It looks like you'll be ready when hunting season comes up.

Kind regards, charlesb

I love those powershoks so much, makes me giggle.

Nice shooting rifle, probably helps that the guy behind the trigger can make it go bang too. I struggle with groups sometimes (I get tremors or some damn thing, hands are shakey), but my dad can clove the heck out of them. Nice shooting!

Looks like everything is working together nicely, raider. The package seems a bit lopsided, though---the scope costs about three times as much as the rifle. Not that there's a thing wrong with that, I've mounted a few scopes that cost more than the rifles they sat upon. Never by a factor of three, though.

Are you going to write a review on that scope?

I appreciate scopes that cost more than the rifles they're mounted on. Yesterday I had two guys out with pretty darn nice rifles, one with hand loads, the other with Hornady ammo that the rifle did like. We had scope problems with both rigs. One scope got a pretty good zero, the other scope would not zero, and never left hundred yard paper. I loaned him my righty 7-08 to work his way down the range.

One other time two guys came out. One with a Kimber 308 and a $300 scope. The other with a Savage Axis and a borrowed Leupold Mark 4. They both ended up shooting the $289 rifle wearing the $1000 scope.

I get that. Maybe the saying should be "bring enough scope."

How much scope you DO bring might vary from "not nearly enough" to "almost enough" to "adequate" to "plenty" to "a whole bunch" to "what do I need a rifle for?" Anything less than adequate is---well, inadequate.

Well, I already had the scope on hand, unmounted, and when I found out Wally had those RAR's on closeout for $199 I wound up buying the '06 and a .243. I already had the ammo on hand too for an old sporterized Springfield A3, so I just decided to stick it all together and go shoot.

There are a couple of changes I will make though. Recoil was not terrible, but noticeable, and expected from this lightweight rifle. I plan to add weight to the stock by about a pound or so. Also, I took almost 2 coils off of the trigger adjust spring and got the trigger adjusted to 2.5lbs. If I keep this scope on it for any length of time I'l probably get some Warne lows and swap them out.

I may do a little write up about the scope after quite a few more rounds, and really do a tracking test on it. The glass is stupid sharp and clear, and I love the plex reticle Tract uses (I'd call it a #4 if it were me though).

Thanks for the nice comments. I am, quite frankly, surprised how well this thing shot.

JG, I have German #4's on most of my scopes, they are my favorite reticle. I've also noticed variation between companies. I have Meopta, Leupold and Zeiss, they are all different.

I asked Trevor a while back if Tract would be coming out with a #4. His response was not anytime soon but the T-Plex reticle had some similarity with a #4. I couldn't see it from the stock photos on their site so he sent an actual picture of one. After seeing the photo, I would call it a skinny #4 for lack of a better term.

My next scope(though I have no idea when) will probably be a Tract, especially since I no longer get dealer pricing.

Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.
