My son shot a hog this afternoon with his 300 BO at 100 yds. Probably went 80-90 lbs. Dropped in its tracks.

I use it and have dropped several. Only had 1 run more than 3 steps and it was because of my shot placement. Great hog round.

My personal opinion

It's better than a 5.56 if you want to recover the hog. It's not as good as a 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC II, but the 300 BLK does have the advantage of offering subsonic ammo if that's important. I view it as a fairly short-range weapon (<125 yards) although it can obviously be used beyond those distances.

The .308 AR-10 variants offer good hog-hitting power and excellent ammunition selection, but they are heavier than the AR-15 based weapons.

That's my 2¢ worth. YMMV IANAL MTFBWY

I am personally not a fan of it, but I rarely hunt over a feeder and often take shots at running hogs. If you do hunt over a feeder you will have time to take a well aimed CNS shot and caliber becomes far less important.

I have been using a blk out for the last 3-4 years for all my hunting. It is a great performer on deer and pigs. I recommend the 125 grain SST or 125 grain Ballistic Tip. The 125 weights give the best velocity while providing perfect mushroom shaped bullet expansion with deep penetration. Below is what I shoot.

Shoot deer and pigs all the time with my two blackouts. If you reload, the Barnes 110 gr over H110 is an accurate load. Guys like Chad make good stuff also.

This, I lug around a At 10 with a huge Raytheon Thermal and wouldn't change it for the world. If you go 300 blackout use subsonic rounds.

Fonzie, what barrel length are you looking to get and will you be shooting suppressed?

If you are planning on a 16" AR unsuppressed, you would be much better off going with a 6.8 or 6.5 Grendel. If you are considering a SBR and/or shooting suppressed, the 300 BLK is a great choice.

Not sure I'm still looking into that... Another thing that has me confused now is the difference between a regular ar and a ar pistol... As far as suppressed no I won't be using that

Fonzie, I have shot hogs with 22-250, 5.56, .300 blk, .243, and 25-06. I have had good success with hogs dropping right there in every platform. It is all about shot placement and not so much about caliber until they start running, and then all bets are off and it depends
On your skill at shooting moving hogs rather than bullet.

My current go to gun is the 5.56. Drop plenty of hogs with one shot.

X2 - it is my absolute favorite pig gun shooting the Barnes 110 Tac-TX ammo (18" barrel). It's a tack driver and hits hard, impressive penetration on big boar hogs. Longest shot I've taken so far with it I stepped off at 165 yrds, was on a boar pushing 275-280 lbs. 2'nd farthest was stepped off at 145 yrds, same size boar. Both hit the dirt. I feel comfortable stretching it out to 200 yrds. Any further than that and seeing with the night vision becomes a problem anyway. When I first starting hunting with the 300 blk I heard all of that "within 100 yrds" stuff too but quickly proved that to be incorrect. I've hunted with the 6.8 SPC also (fine round) but I'll take the 300 over it. Several of my pig hunting compadres are selling their 6.8's and either converting their 5.56's to 300 or just buying new 300's now, they too have become fans. I have an Omega can coming for mine, though my gun isn't that loud to begin with. The only way I would use subs is if I KNEW I was going to be close. IMO subs are for fun/plinking, super is for hunting.

X2, I just had to learn how much to lead them. Once I figured that out have had no problem taking them down.

I have only shot two of my many hogs over a feeder, both were dropped right there CNS shots. However, Nearly every other hog I have shot has been free roaming in fields, some lone boars but most in big sounders, and almost every one of them has dropped right there with a well aimed CNS shot too. The feeder does not make a better shot, the person shooting makes the better shot.

Don't make it more complicated than it should be.

Agreed.

and to add, most of the hits I make on running pigs are body shots. As mentioned before, I like those bullets. They penetrate shield, break bone (shoulder blades) = dead pig. Sometimes they run a bit after being hit, sometimes they don't. Not a big deal in the open crop country as you can see where they fall.
