I have a new Cannon safe with keypad. I know it says it will beep when the battery is low but to be honest i'm tone deaf and cant hear beeps very well, in fact when we were resetting the code, I couldn't hear it beep at all. So I'm planning on just changing it out every 6 months. Think thats too much? I figure better safe that sorry, five bucks a year isn't going to break me. Or am I way off and need to change it more often?

Depends how often your gonna be punching buttons and using it. Change it every other year and you should be fine. If your in and out of it everyday or multiple times everyday then i would do it once a year

Maybe I'll just put it on my Smoke detector schedule. I change them at the first of the year every year.

I change mine every Thanksgiving...I got it around that time and it just seems to be a good reminder.

I would say that would be fine. Every six months would be like belt, suspenders, and holding your britches up with your free hand.

Glad this was brought up. I don't recall when it was exactly, but the last time I changed mine was when I was in a hurry to get out of the house. That was when my battery decided to die.

What happens if it does actually go completely dead?

Change mine every time it dies.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

What happens if it does actually go completely dead? Nothing. It saves your code. Same as taking the battery out to change it.

My first battery worked for about 2-3 years and then went dead dead. I left it dead for about 6 months and just used the key. When I plugged a new battery in, I'm pretty sure it was reset to the factory default code. (Not 100% sure, but pretty dang sure)
Now it seems my battery goes dead all by itself every 6 months or so without warning. I now change it within a couple weeks of it going dead and it keeps my same code.
I get into my safe at least once a day if that matters
