During the 22lr shortage I picked up some CCI 22 shorts, its all I could get . Sat on them for a few years and broke them out today in the Lil Badger I got for my son. Boy these don't pack much punch, broke out the Drock tool and opened up the HP in them. Should add a bit to the performance, we will know based on the next corn thief that walks or hops by the blind. Look kinda impressive.

It should lighten up the bullet, but it destroyed the BC in doing so. So it will lose velocity much quicker.

Ive shot raccoons with 22lr a bit. If you don't hit something important on the inside, head heart spine etc. it can take a whole lot of 22 LR to stop them. I personally have never noticed much difference between the shorts and longs.

Hope they are still accurate for you.

Short hollow points are my favorite round for squirrels and rabbits and have used them for hogs in small traps where they will enter one side of the head but not exit the other. Have dispatched lots of critters around the house growing up with them as well and they are a favorite of raccoon hunters using dogs to tree them. Very quite from a rifle as well.

That said they have been very hard to find the last few years. About time to stock up on some next time I see them.

^^^ Yes!! When I had a squirrel problem and lived in Dallas, I tried everything to kill or get rid of them. They chewed through our house and got in our attic, and it was a HUGE mess. I borrowed a buddies high powered air rifle, and after multiple perfect hits, it would not kill them. So, I pulled out my Winchester lever gun with 22 shorts. They were louder, but the bullet would enter and not exit. So it was a perfect squirrel round. I racked up at least 20+ kills with that combo. The coolest part was that I had several I would shoot through the window screen from inside the house. I would line up the rifle, existing hole in screen (from previous shots), and the squirrel. The hole was no bigger than a pencil and I shot multiple squirrels at the base of the tree and on the tree (tree as a back stop, also). The hole was on the low inside corner of the screen, so you could not see it unless you were looking for it.

Regular 22 shorts always seemed about the same noise to me as a LR also. CB shorts etc. are much quieter though.

Didn't lighten up bullet at all, the die just reformed the nose. The BC might be an issue, but a 22short ranges and sub sonic speeds its probably a non issue. They tend to shoot better after reforming due to the bullet diameter being more consistent after being sized in the die, I have never noticed a POI change.
I used the SGB die on some as well.

Wow, I never knew you could do that to a rimfire bullet.

I didn't even know there was a die for a 22.

This is the one I use, there are several different types. It makes each round a consistent .225" which is a little snug in a shorter chamber. I think that is what makes ammo shoot better.

The things that I used to do when I was younger, I can't believe I am still alive. Used to shoot bull frogs with a 22 long back in the mid sixties. Well, when you hit one they just jump back in the tank and lot's of times we would lose them. I had the bright idea to take a hack saw blade and cut a notch straight across half way down the bullet. They weren't very accurate but at a few feet away, they would stop a frog dead in its tracks.
