Like a lot of people that live in the Katy/Houston area. I want to hunt but there is nowhere to go. Does anyone know of any public land to dove hunt on? Or is willing to let my dad and I tag along with you and hunt your land?

From a public land standpoint there is the Hebert Unit which is just south of Waller, then there is the Jozwiak Road Unit just west of Chappell Hill. Those are the two closest to the west side of Houston. But it being public land don't expect too much, from talking to people who hunt those two places, they said it doesn't pick up until mid season.

It may not be what your thinking but it's fairly cheap to dove hunt. You should be able to find something for around $75-$100 for a day hunt unless you are looking for a place you can go regularly.

Thanks for the info. I guess all the birds are in the city because if I could use a shotgun in my backyard I'd limit out in 20 minutes. But I have to wait for one to land close enough to try to pop it with a BB gun. grin

We'd probably be willing to pay $75 to go

The birds just haven't been flying yet around Katy. Try up around Monaville or Bellville(the best so far). Call this guy in Monaville 281-725-1011. He says the birds are on and off but for $100 he will let you re-hunt if nothing is flying on your day. I'm thinking about hitting him up. The Hebert preserve is about 10 minutes from one of our leases and can be really good when the birds are flying. I'm hoping this stalled front will push some birds down. I have a place between Bryan and Waco where the birds are just now starting to trickle in.

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

I want to try Hebert later in the season and just hope its not loaded down with people like my brother in law experienced on opening day.

Hey OP,
Have you find a good place?
I've tried Hebert Preserve three time last week, I couldn't find a dove to save my life.
I did see a hog tho, but only thing I had with me were shotgun full of bird shot and S&W Gov (which I can't use on this property).
I had to get the heck out of dodge! haha
