Was a gift. I can't find any markings of caliber or manufacturer. He said that his grandfather made it, So I assumme that someone made the stock for it. ANy help is appreciated.

Definitely a 1903 Springfield, can't say if it is the updated A3 variant. The stock IMO looks like a Rinehart Fajen design that was a popular style in the early/mid 50's. Fajen is/was a prominent DIY source of gun stocks.

A very nice piece of work done by a craftsman of ability for those days.

Take the scope off and you can see the model. It's a 1903 springfield, I have the same gun that was my wifes grandfathers. Mine was built around 1908 IIRC.

Yall beat me to it. I found a few 1903s online but from what I'm seeing, some seem to have different style safety's on them? Some safety's only toggled about 60*, while other's flip all the way over to the opposite side.

My dad has my late grandpa's old 30-06 that looks just like the OPs (the action, not that beautiful stock). It's some sort of sporterized Springfield, but we couldn't ever find the model on it either, hence my confusion.

Mine even has a similar stock. I will get a pic up in the next couple of days.

last time Dad looked up a price for me, mine showed to be worth around $1,200. That was about 15 years ago.

Its an 03A3. The scope mount base is mounted to the original 03A3 rear sight dovetail same as an 03A4 would be. Bolt has been reconfigured to clear the scope. Wing safety would be an aftermarket add on. As said, a common stock configuration, probably Fajen. If there is any markings on the crest area visible, you might check the location and serial number comparing A3s and A4s. You would not want to post the serial number, so google would be your friend on that. Not likely, but would be worth checking to see if the parent rifle was an A4. I see something interesting in that the Redfield scope mount base has a factory fold up peep sight. If the scope is also Redfield it is likely the orginal scope purchased by your Grandfather along with the mount.

Long story short I picked up a similar rifle recently. Mounted a scope, went to the range, got settled, pulled the trigger and click no bang.waited a minute and started to lift the bolt then it went bang. Thought maybe it was me but same thimg happened 2nd round and I sent it over the berm.

Have a soft for older sportered rifles, seems like about half have some sort of issue.

I have the rifle being checked out at this moment. I didn't know anything about these guns until yesterday so it's a fun learning experience. I was looking through the blue book and got really excited for a few minutes, but it upon further research I see that these guns overall aren't that expensive, but some can be pretty valuable. I also read about the early models being dangerous, luckily this one has a higher serial # and isn't in the no shoot zone.

See if your local library has a copy of the book "Mr Rifleman" written by (with a ghost writer) Colonel Townsend Whelen as the story of his life, among which was the development of the 1903 Springfield rifle after the Spanish American War, where the newish 7x57 Mausers used by the Spanish Army wreaked havoc on the American troops that were still shooting out of date Black Powder 30-40 Krags. Lots of pictures and sidebar notes too.

Really worth the effort to find a copy.

I'll take an old interesting blued / walnut rifle over an off the shelf little bit better shooting matte/composite rifle any day of the week. You need to confirm caliber, zero it and go smack a couple critters with it.
