Do you save much money by building from kits or buying the main components separate and assembling?
I love tearing down and putting things together, but at the same time I want to get in the AR club soon.
I dont mind buying off branded things either.

To me building one has nothing to do with price. It's the fact that you have an end product of what you want. Sure you can buy a cheap AR and add on as you go but why not do it right the first time.

At today's saturated market prices, u really save no $ on a build. Especially the 1st. Cuz u have to factor in the cost of tools u will need. Like jig, AR barrel nut wrench etc. But u do get to piece together exactly what u want. Plus it's good knowledge to have when and if something breaks down.

I got a my lower parts kit from cheaper than dirt it's a cmmg kit and then I bought the items I wanted to upgrade such as ambi safety selector and magpul bolt catch and trigger. I have been shopping cheaper than dirt and also primary arms in Pearland they have everything and great customer service.

You won't really save any $ but it's fun and educational to do it yourself. I used to have a $700 AR that somehow turned into a $2300 AR over a couple of years.

An off the shelf AR15 has standard mil-spec trigger, plastic handle, cheap fore end, standard stock, etc. Building your own, you will likely upgrade all of those on the build and not buy the cheaper parts. By not having those cheaper parts to start with, I guess you save a little. But like mentioned, there's the cost of tools so it will cost you more.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Unless your the guy that comes to my house to use all my tools. Then its cheaper for you. That's 100% correct! The real question is how many tools u have access to; either buying or borrowing? That will really tell u what u can get for your budget. If you're looking for as cheap as humanly possible, then something like those Palmetto kits seem like pretty good deals plus it's good for first timers because it literally gots everything you'll need. But only if u can have someone help u out. If u plan on getting a tricked out ar with specific parts that are higher end (geissle trigger, a brand name barrel, some fancy stock of your dreams with some super cool and expensive handgaurd) then there's a chance u could build it cheaper buy/borrowing specific tools. It would save u even more if u had tools in general; work area, vise, punches, pliers, hammer assortment, etc.
I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

Jbell99 u can save so much $ by not shopping w/cheaper than dirt!! x100 Watch for online holiday sales also. Geissele triggers was the cheapest I've seen over the Labor Day weekend. Primary Arms, Palmetto and Joeboboutfitters I've had good dealings with online.

Nobody even asked what he wants/needs in an AR - and why.
Need a basic and reliable utility gun? Buy an S&W or DPMS factory gun for $550. to $625. Want to heavily customize it or have a special purpose in mind? Build one the way you want it.

I just want the experience of building one...and I think really I want iron sights, but I guess with the ability to add optics, but I want to get comfortable and skilled using the irons.
So basically, I want to just build my first (which will turn into many more projects in the future) just to get in the door.
I prefer building it so I know the gun inside and out.
Want to do as cheap as possible though.

Sign up for the PSA deals blast. I get at least 5 emails a week with pretty sweet deals. Some of their deals are too good to pass up. I think u can build just off their deals for around the 450-500 mark. Palmetto State Armory.

Yep, I just got several from PSA. A little over $500 is what I have in each of them and that includes transfer fees on the lowers.
