Got a friend in Hawaii who's wife is headed to Austin for a business seminar. He is asking for recommendations for Texas BBQ in Austin. Recommendations?

Franklins if you want to stand in line for two hours. Or...drive 30 minutes South to Lockhart and hit Kreutz Market or Blacks; no lines and better BBQ...IMHO?

Freedmans near the UT campus is damn good as well as Stlies Switch...I got the 3 meat plate there last weekend and it could have easily fed 3 people....The brisket had a great bark..Spicy sausage and the ribs were perfect as well....

Franklin Barbecue and LA Barbecue are absolutely amazing, but expect lines at both. There are lots of good places in Austin now where the line will be short or non-existent. Freedman's, Terry Black's, Stiles Switch, and Mickelthwait Craft Meats are almost as good as Franklin and LA Barbecue. I would highly recommend Freedman's to anybody, because they have a full bar with some outstanding bourbon as well.

LA Barbecue, Franklins, J. Mueller Meat Co., Micklethwait Craft Meats, Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew, Stubb's, Don's ... to name a few. The Salt Lick out in Driftwood or Round Rock for their pork ribs (not a fan of their brisket). The County Line on the Lake (2222 & 360) known for their beef ribs and has a nice atmosphere out on the deck during cooler weather.
move outside of Austin proper ... Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor (where most of the above mentioned Austin BBQ places pitmaster's trained prior to opening their own places in yuppyville), down in Lockhart in my order of preference would be Kreuz Market and Black's, out to Llano would be Inman's Country Kitchen (brisket & turkey sausage!) or Cooper's for the "feel" (not the meat except the thick chop). Georgetown would be Full House BBQ (food trailer park off north Austin Ave).

Whats the place off Bee Cave? I think that was the name of road a little Googling ... Schmidt Family Barbecue, Bee Caves B-B-Q and County Line ("on the hill" as opposed to "on the lake").

Franklins if you want to stand in line for two hours. Or...drive 30 minutes South to Lockhart and hit Kreutz Market or Blacks; no lines and better BBQ...IMHO? Black's in Lockhart, or Benny's east of Austin on 71 near McKinney Roughs. Black's has some great deer mounts, which are worth a trip. Benny's is a roadside place with a picnic table, but darned good. I've never been willing to wait with the hipsters for Franklin's. I hear it's good, just could drive to Black's, eat, and be back home with time left over. Brisket and the beef rib are the don't miss items at Black's.
