Over the past few years I've noticed Remington Arms has been getting a lot of hate about the quality of their guns. Maybe I just got lucky because in the past 2 years I've bought another 700 varmint rifle in .308 and an 870 pump for a home defense build and the fit and finish on both of them are top notch. The 700 is a tack driver that has no problems feeding or extracting after a few hundred rounds as well as the 870. They both just feel just as solid as the old Remingtons my father had from the late 80's early 90's.

Has anybody gotten a low quality weapon from them because I'm thinking about getting either an 11-87 or the V3 autoloader soon too. Just gotta try and sneak it passed the wife bolt

I have an older 700 and a newer 700 both were about the same cost. My older 700 looks like a $1000 gun and the newer one looks like a $500 gun. They use plastic where they can, finish the metal as cheaply as possible, and the stocks are awful. But function wise, they both work perfectly fine.

I don't know about present day, but several years back there was for sure some serious QC issues going on with Remington and Marlin.

I've seen enough junk from them to avoid them for awhile.

How many tacks have you driven with the rifle? A hammer is a more efficient tool.

I live in a small desert town, and so far have had two different shooters bring me Remington 700's that the bolt handle had fallen off of.

If this happens to you, PM me, I know a fellow that you can send it to who will TIG weld it back on -permanently.

I bought a 787 (I think, low budget rem) that had 10 rounds through it. I then found out after 10 more rounds the action had a bur in it which waded up the bolt. Called for help/price on parts and was told to call another number of a guy who can fix it. Non Remington guy FYI, just a gunsmith

I'll stick with my Winchesters, Tikkas and Brownings.

Had more than a few Remingtons over the years. Some were great, some were beyond bad. Never had a bolt handle come off, but have had 2 700 factory trigger groups fail and one 700 receiver that was d&t'd off center. I have one 700 (with a Timney), one 870 and a Model 7 (with a new Timney) left. The 700's do make a good starting point for a build, though.

Too many other good rifle manufacturers out there with better QC, IMO.

I gave up on Remington long time ago. I usually buy Savage. If there's an issue with it, They go out there way to help

I have one Rem 700 action. The front base screw hole is half a screw hole off to the left. I had to mill the base to the left to get it to screw down. The trigger was too heavy. I did the DIY trigger poundage reduction, but was still not satisfied. Installed a hundred dollar Timney.

1990's model 870 has never failed, but I'll stick with Tikka bolt action rifles from now on.

That was the same exact issue my 700 had. Same fix too. bang

Savage makes a good rifle. One of the easier ones to do a do it yourself rebarrel on. Try out a Tikka if you can, though. Smooth as butter action, excellent out of the box trigger and accuracy. cheers

I have had good service out of Remington guns. Been shooting them for over 50 years. They have made a few that were not what they should have been but they have made millions of fine guns and their sales records for 870's, 700's, and 1100's reflect quality. Should my life depend on a gun's reliability, it would be an 870 that would get the call.

Between dad and I, we have at least 8 Remingtons that I can think of. He's got 3 700s and a 870 wingmaster, and I've got 3 700s and a 870 express.

Neither of us have had any issues with any of them except my 14 year old 870 express. I had some issue with spent shells getting stuck once the gun was nice and hot. We took to it with a drimmel tool and then a polishing wheel and it's much better, but still occasionally a few will stick.

Never a problem with any of their bolt guns.

Like ZK-315, I had a 1990's model 870 express that would get locked up with a spent hull in the chamber. You could really rear back on the pump and it would come out. Took it in for warranty and it has been great ever since.

Not saying they are the best, but I have no complaints out of any of mine. My whole family shoots Remington 700's and ive never heard a complaint of any of them.

Redchevy, Did they stick a new barrel on your 870 or could you tell if they just drimmeled out that rib inside the receiver? I drimmeled out that rib and although its much better, on hot days and lots of shots, i'll still get a few shells stuck.

I have 3 Remingtons and recently got my first Tikka. The Tikka has a better factory stock, the finish is nicer, the bolt is smoother, and the trigger is excellent right out of the box. If Tikka can do all of that, plus guarantee accuracy, for $478 shipped, Remington should be able to sell their 700s for $300.

I have had my fill of Remington 700s still like the 788s, still think the 788s were Remington's most accurate out of the box rifles.

Have one that would go bang sometimes without touching the trigger, installed a new Timney issue resolved but not by Remington. That was pre recall.

2 have had screw holes for scope mounts drilled incorrectly.

One had a machining burr on the boltface so large it prevented chambering a round.

Lets just say IMO there are plenty of better rifles than Remington.

If there was any decent QC inspection the holes wrong and the bolt face burr would have been caught.

They did not replace the barrel but honestly don't know what they did to it, I was pretty young at the time. I have never had so much as a hiccup since I got it back.

We have a 40 yr old 1100 20GA that was our only shotgun for nearly 30 years. I've probably put 5,000 rounds through it with no hiccup. Have a 788 .243 of about that same age, and it's my dad's regular deer rifle. Also have a 700 ADL .243, probably a 2003 model. The bolt on it is pretty tight but it shoots very well and it has performed flawlessly.

I do feel like their newer products, particularly the lower-end firearms, have slipped quite a bit in build quality. The R51 is a prime example, instead of spending a few more bucks per unit they shipped thousands and had to have a massive recall and re-engineering to get them back on the market. I looked at a lightly used 1911 Enhanced that was decent, but the finish on the beaver tail was already tarnishing and it just didn't feel very well made. The SPS rifles aren't much, if any, above the Ruger American, Savage Axis, etc.

It's a shame, really. They were once arguably America's premier gun maker but the ownership changes have hurt them.
