I just inherited a few guns, going Saturday to get my safe and get it inside (I have a small thin safe but it's not good enough for what I am adding), there are about 10-12 that I will never shoot, just want to wipe them down and put them at the back of the safe, what oil is best for this? I know there will be several opinions and thats fine, I just want to hear what some of you do. Also, it's going in a spare bedroom, so it will be climate controlled but should I get anything to help with humidity anyway? The safe is a Canon 64 gun.

I use wax instead of oil on the outside. Inside the barrel, I use Hoppes gun grease as it will not dry out. I also cram a patch or small rag into the chamber to soak up any grease that might drain down in storage. There is an old shotgun that I store this way, that belonged to a relative who has passed away. I do not particularly want to shoot it, but I do not want to give it up, either.

It has been in storage for at least ten years. I take it out to clean and inspect it once a year, whether it needs it or not.

If it's a wood stock I also recommend storing them muzzle down. Oil seeping into the head of a stock will cause a lot of problems.

Everyone learned differently. I was taught to store muzzle down for two reasons. Back in the 50's we only had wood stocks, oil could make the wood "spongy" after years of storage. Also, with muzzle down the oil was easily removed with a patch. Storing muzzle up could allow the oil to accumulate inside the bolt. On many firearms cleaning the bolt correctly could be a major effort.

Regarding the best oil I don't know.

I have been using Corrosion-X for around 15 years without rust issues. There are newer ones out that might be better, figure if it ain't broke why change.

For long term storage I use the same thing I have been using for 15+ years and really see no need to change since it is working in a safe that is in the house with no dehumidifier. I take all wood off and apart so I can get to all metal parts and soak them down in Corrosion-X then after soaking a little while wipe it off and reassemble. Those guns are then good to go for long term storage or the hunting season.

By wiping off the parts there is not enough oil left to run into the stock but enough in the pours of the metal to protect it.
