I am looking to protect a truck gun so need it to be long lasting and not easily rubbed off.
When buy a military grade gun they come with some kind of thick protectant on it that needs to be taken off with kerosene or gas. Would that work as a daily rust preventative ?

Cosmoline is what you're referring to, and it will gum up an action. Some guy had a detailed test of rust preventatives a while back. Someone had a link to it, but I think froglube was the most effective.

It will take a little work, but it will work really well. First, clean the entire exterior of the rifle with wax & grease remover, or rubbing alcohol. You are trying to remove all traces of old oil and lubricants. You need to wear latex gloves while you do this so that your skin oils do not contaminate any cleaned metal surfaces. Now get you some good liquid, or paste, car wax. Using an acid brush, or a Q-tip, apply the wax to all metal surfaces that you want protected. Put the gun up somewhere safe to allow the wax to dry. The next day, apply a second coat over-top of the first coat. Again, let it sit over-night to dry.

You can wipe off the dried wax if you like, but I prefer to leave it on there as extra protection. You can reapply new coats of wax at any time. Try and be conscious about touching metal surfaces with your bare hands. Always try and pick up the gun, and handle it, by only touching the stock, or sling. This will go a LONG way towards preventing rust. The wax will really help should you forget and grab a metal surface.

The best is the Hornady One Shot TAP-HD Extreme Gun Cleaner Conditioner and Dry Lube. Google it and you'll see.

I use Barricade in my muzzleloaders and never have any rust. If it will work on muzzleloaders, it will work perfectly for a truck gun. Just make sure you have properly cleaned the gun before applying.
