Buck did fantastic on his first hunt. We killed 7 shy of a 2 man limit and he retrieved about 15 marks and retrieved about 3 or 4 blinds. I didn't let him retrieve all the birds, but I'm sure he would have. We only had one bird that he could't find. I didn't bring my gun out for the first 10 or so birds and just let my buddy shoot them and focused on instructing Buck. He caught on pretty quickly. A few were water marks that went into very thick cover in the pond. Zipper hunted with another member in our party and got a few retrieves in as well, she even brought back two birds on 1 retrieve.

Proud papa today. Both my dogs performed excellent.

It's always fun watching them work.

Outstanding. Glad you had a great start to the year.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Thanks everyone. I'm pretty happy with him so far. I hunted him a few more times and did notice a few things I need to start working on.

1. He's developed a tendency to get a little self-employed on some of the blinds I sent him on. Hunting short and/or ignoring(or not hearing) my sit whistle when I go to give a cast. So we'll go back to work on that. We were hunting a plowed field though in which we'd killed multiple birds, so he may have stopped short because he smelled a different bird we'd already picked up on the way out. Instead of listening to me though, he was trying to be a hero and come up with a bird, problem was he was about 30 yards too short.

2. You could really tell he doesn't like dove feathers sticking in his mouth. He got better as we hunted more, but spit a few of the birds out at my feet instead of delivering to hand. I think that will change once he gets more experienced. I did give him an ear pinch when he dropped any birds and made sure he delivered them all to hand.
