we combine our wheat in May/early June... nothing left now, in fact most are plowed by July... so why all the fuss over wheat fields? heck we combined milo in July and any lost grain sprouted after the first rains(wet year and unusual)

Leave it unplowed and burn it in August. Best dove field there is...a burnt wheat field.

I thought the same thing. But got invited to hunt N of Throckmorton Sat & Sun on a place with aprox 800 to 1000 acres of wheat which was cut back in June I am guessing. Just stubble left in the pastures. Then I looked hard and saw plenty of wheat heads here and there and almost every bird was stuffed with wheat. There were thousands of birds. Like a dream where flock after flock were lifting and swarming your position over and over. I'll never forget the weekends hunt. It's going to be difficult to come close to the experience of it ever again I think.

We hunted wheat fields that had either hail damage or just didn't make a good crop and the birds were great. The farmers will plow them by the first of Oct. and we will adjust accordingly. But for now tons of birds.

Be careful not to knock any wheat down that is currently growing. The only reason I say that is my brother in law was hunting a milo field that was harvested weeks ago and was talking to the GW who was walking around. He said even though it has been harvested there are still some that weren't cut and also new growth since we have had all this rain. GW's will write you a ticket for baiting if you are in a field knocking that new growth down even if you're looking for a dead bird!

are they possibly referring to hunting freshly planted winter wheat fields that haven't germinated yet? and herbie, I guess theoretically they could write you a ticket for that(they CAN write one for almost anything), but if it got serious it would not hold up if you fought it very hard.

My brother in law ran into a guy early last week while scouting some public land north of Winnie and the property was a rice field in years past. The guy was telling him the GW's would write tickets to people and dog owners if they weren't going straight up a row. So apparently knocking down rice while retrieving is baiting as well, then also I can see that is also lost crop to the owner. However, the farmer is taking a chance on that happening since the rice is still in the field not yet harvested. It's somewhat of a gray area to me and yeah I could see stuff like that being thrown out if fought.

I plant my wheat field late Sept every year. We hunt over it as soon as I drill it, GW comes out every year and never had a problem. Normal Agriculture Practice.

The two best fields I've ever seen were wheat fields. One was a wheat field that was unable to be harvested due to wet conditions. Sunflowers came up around the wheat. You had wheat underneath 6-7 feet of sunflowers. Landowner took his time shredding it little by little through the season. Crazy numbers
Second was another wheat field that a friend of mine bought. The previous owner didn't harvest the wheat and it was unbelievable as well.

Hunt harvested wheat stubble every year and do well. The harvesters won't get everything and not all of it sprouts after rains....craws are loaded with wheat. Same in harvested Milo or corn.

There was a big thread on here about a month ago and I thought the same thing. Was told it was not illegal to hunt over crops and it was even ok to shred them. I argued not but was wrong. Talked to game warden and he said that shredding milo and wheat was fine for dove just not waterfowl. Anyone else remember his?

Fields can be manipulated for Doves, but not waterfowl. For waterfowl it has to be a part of 'normal ag practices'.

Just curious...what part of shredding a wheat field for baling is not a normal agricultural practice? We've hunted geese for years on wheat and head feed fields that were shredded and baled.

What ever a farmer does to prepare his fields and harvest them is normal.
If he harvests a wheat or milo field then turns around and bales them for hay then that's normal. Hunt away.
If he turns around and sows wheat seed right after he harvest's it then that's normal. Hunt away.

the "normal agriculture practice" can also involve having the local ag ext. people determining what is normal and what isn't for that specific area
