Thursday I was out dove hunting and had about 15 hogs show up they got within about 10 or 15 yards but I only had dove shot on me I left my pistol at home ( I know I shouldn't). My question is how effective is a .45acp agianst a hog I was talking to a few people and some said no a 45acp will not kill a hog some said it would. I still want to be ethical and not just wound it I'm very proficient with a pistol so accuracy I am not worried about

Ive put one down with 45acp but it wouldn't be my first choice. I carry a Glock 10mm on my hip when I hunt now for that very reason, hog secondary.

10-15yds w/a .45 shot in the head should be no problem. Shooooooooould be. Ear hole 'em & he gone.

10mm would be a better choice but a 45 should get the job done.

What I didn't mention in my first comment was that, like any firearm, the bullet choice matters. When I said I'd shot a few, I was only taking about hogs that were not in a pen. I used to trap a lot of hogs of various sizes, and sometimes I'd terminate them with my 22lr lever gun and sometimes with the 357. My standard 357 load was/is a 125 gr JHP, loaded rather hot. But that bullet and load didn't work as well to drop the hogs as a 165 gr lead Keith type bullet at moderate velocity. I observed that, but have no explanation as to why. Based on that observation, I'd think that a 45 ACP load should work great.

If a .45, I would use 200gr hard cast swc with 8gr Hodgdon CFE Pistol. I always carry a .357 with 158 semi-jacketed flat points.

.45 is fine. If memory serves, this was with Hornady 185gr Critical Defense. Either that or Golden Sabers.

.40 S&W works like a champ
.17HMR and .22WMR will drop a pig also (shot placement is important then)
.45ACP won't be an issue

Started playing with .45 Colt, going to try the 250 grain fp lead first.

Dick Metcalf specs a 200 gr bullet at 1000 fps as a reliable black bear killer. In my experience with hogs the same bullet traveling the same speed is more than adequate. Any decent .45 load should kill a hog cleanly if placed right.

45ACP will get it done for sure.
I shot a mid size hog with a 357 Sig Gold Dot. I was out doing some work on my feeders and saw it at the feeder in the middle of the day. I got to about 40 yards which was as close as I could get and fired off a round. The hit was very marginal (high and little far back) but it went completely through and pig only made it about 30 yards before crashing. Based on what I saw that day I have a new respect for simi-auto rounds for hunting. In the past I had only used them finish off a wounded pig but now I would have no problem at all trying to hunt a pig with one.

.45 will work..but it has to be a FMJ.

Guy on our lease last year shot a hog with #8 from a 20 gauge at 10 yrds. That shot hit the hog in the head like a slug since it didn't have time to open the pattern up. Killed that hog instantly. Other than that, yes a 45 is plenty but I disagree about FMJ only including head shots. I shot hogs with fmjs and it didn't kill them. I'd try a jacketed HP instead.

I have killed hogs with a 45 ACP, it works just fine. I would use a hard cast or control expansion bullet. Do not use 185 gr Hollow Points.
10mm is a better choice though and there seems to be more bullets made for hunting.

I don't understand the Hollow points only comments. I've shot hogs with .45 ACP plenty of times. Hollow points have always done a better job.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

I shoot hogs almost daily, have killed them with a .17hmr up to a .308. as far as pistols, I believe in revolvers, nothing less than a .357 magnum and a hard cast bullet. some people think autos are ok, they will do the job, but why not use a safe sensible pistol.

Thank you guys I was just curious when I talked to a couple people and no one agreed lol I carry a springfield mod 2 and i have it loaded with 220 grain hollow points and mix in a few regular fmj. I have no doubt in my shooting ability I just want to be ethical and not wound and put it out as fast as I can if I got in that situation agian. I also bought some buck shot to keep in my dove bag

Like anything else shot placement is key. I have a thing for the .38 Super and wouldn't hesitate to use it on a hog. If you have a .45 ACP I don't see the need to go to a 10MM.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

9mm works also. Put this sow on the ground Saturday night with it.
