I guess gun writers have to write articles. Most big game bullets work fine when you hit the animal in the vitals. Nothing against the Core-lokt but if it's not any better than a Hot Cor, Interlock or Power Point. I think my favorite is the Nosler Ballistic Tip.

My favorite is definitely the Nosler Ballistic Tip, but if all I had were Powerpoints or CoreLokt or SST's, I'd be Ok. Never had any of them fail the job if I put the bullet in the lungs.

Nosler partition, the standard by which all hunting bullets are judged, for over 60 years. The accubond is a very close 2nd.

Gee...I wonder if there's a reason they're all compared to the Partition. grill

As long as it includes Nosler Partitions I am good with the list.

You lost me at Core Lokt. No, doubt it's the #1 best bullet on their list.

Well I'm sure those are the best five bullets for the author. For another person that list will be different. Don't know if they are the best but I use:
.223 - GameKing and PowerPoint
.243 - PowerPoint and SST
6.5x55 - Berger Hunting VLD
.270 - Core-Lokt
30-30 - Core-Lokt
30-06 - Core-Lokt

Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

Shot placement is the most important factor.

Exactly, head and neck shots will work with any bullet.

Will say, in the last couple of years, I mostly have been using Barnes TTSX's and like them. They can be placed through the shoulders to produce DRT results, but they do not leave lots of bloodshot meat with lead fragments to trimmed out.

jeffbird, glad to see you say that. The wife & I are headed to Montana in late Oct/early Nov for an elk hunt. She will be toting a 7mm Mauser AI & at this point it will be loaded with 150 TTSX. Got any load suggestions? Second choice will be 150 Partitions. Thanks

Never loaded for the 7x57, but have loaded for the 7-08, which is essentially the same.

Varget worked well for 140 or lighter bullets. H4350 or H414 worked with the heavier bullets.

For Barnes, here are a few observations, which might be helpful.

The thing I have noticed with the Barnes is that velocity at impact needs to be 1900 - 2000 fps for consistently good results.

The TTSX's have produced 100% DRT results thus far. The older TSX's I found to be inconsistent about opening. So, stick with the TTSX.

The bullets really hold together and penetrate well, so a light bullet works fine, better actually as they need impact velocity for reliable performance.

Even using a 80 in a 243 on large feral pigs, they have always exited, so a heavier bullet is not needed for penetration.

The best results usually are with lighter weights than usual for the round.

In my 260, I now use the 100 grain, 130 or 150 in 308 Win, and only a 165 in 300 Win Mag.

Looking at the Hodgdon and Barnes online data for 7x57, only one load exceeds 2600 fps with a 150 grain, most are 2400 +/-, which will limit the distance to meet the impact velocity threshold.

I would suggest dropping down to the 120. As stated above, shot placement is more important and she likely will shoot the 120's better and more comfortably, and they can be loaded up to 2,900 - 3,000 zone.

Last year, I hunted elk with a friend that lives in Colorado. Most everyone in his family uses a 243 Win with Barnes for elk and they do fine, so it really does not take a big boomer.

They keep their distances to 300 yards, more often the shots are in timber and thus very close.

Partitions always seem to work well, though accuracy can be sub-optimal, it really just depends on the particular rifle.

Good luck on the hunt.

Chad's version of the 308 loaded with Sierra game king 165 gr's are as good as anything out there, bar none, on any North American native animal...
