I've done this post the other way (rifle this scope?) and had good feedback so here goes. I built a 6.5 Grendel bolt gun with a 16.25" barrel on a savage action (with a suppressor and shorter stock) for my boys to kill cull deer with and we sighted it in yesterday with a Burris 3-9 fullfield and my son didn't like the scope after shooting with higher powered tactical scopes (spoiled I know, I've killed a "plethora" of animals with the same Burris scope on a 223). Clarity is good enough but I do prefer a little more power in a "wheat field" scope and my oldest has killed deer out to 300yds already shooting my full size rifle (6.5 creed suppressed) with a 12x bushnell elite tactical. Considering clarity, magnification and price please give a little input on what scope you would use. I do want to keep the reticle simple enough the boys don't get confused on what is the crosshair center when they are a bit excited.

Leupold makes an easy-to-use 12 and 14x optic. VX2 is great but Rifleman and VX1 not so much.

I've shot 200yd easy with my 4.5-14x50mm Zeiss Conquest. It has a #4 crosshair so np hashes or anything. Used to be a $700 scope but now I don't think they make it.

Vortex is good too. Just shot a 6-18x44 Crossfire II but the glass is blurry past 12x (@100yd). Viper HS is very clear out at 100 and 300yd on 24x, but the model I used had a MOA reticle with holds and stuff.

First good choice in rifle and caliber. The trajectory of the Grendel and 308 are very close to each other so a scope that works well for one works well for the other. Recoil with that build and suppressor should be very little.

Both my Grendels ware scopes with capped target turrets so I can dial out if needed but not worried about the turrets getting moved without my wanting them to. One has an older Zeiss Conquest 2.5-10 the other a Bushy 6500 2.5-16. Both work well. I sighted both in at 200 like a lot of my scopes are and for shots out to 300 I do not dial, beyond that caps off and crank the elevation.

More than 10X is not really needed for hunting deer IMO but if it gives the shooter confidence go for it, just remember the higher the magnification the less field of view and more critical the eye box for relief for full view become and above 10X adjustable for parallax is needed. Also if shooting beyond 300 parallax becomes much more critical.

With your son already being "spoiled" to higher magnification go for it. Vortex, Leupold, Zeiss, bushnell, Burris all make scopes that will fit that and then some.

Not sure if you are going to use reloads or factory loads. The Hornady 123gr A-Max and SST are good to go in the Grendel when hunting deer and would lean to the SST for a little tougher bullet. The 6.5 Grendel data for 16 inch barreled guns on Hornady's website are actually shot from an AR with a 14.5 inch barrel with a pinned flash hider. With that Savage barrel being 1.75 inches longer, not having a gas tax and the little added from a suppressor velocity should be a bit higher than advertised.

How do you like the conversion? What caliber was your donor action?

I have been contemplating converting my savage 243 to a 6.5 Grendel as well.

Vortex razor hd lh 3-15x42, trijicon accupoint 2.5-12x42, nightforce shv 4-14x50. My 90% gun is a AR 6.5 Grendel with a trijicon accupoint 3-9x40.

I have a nightforce 3-10x42 on my 20' barrel 6.5 Grendel (ar) I really like to see 800ft lbs of energy minimum for a whitetail so that's around 500 yards. For coyotes and such I think 500 is fine and that's around 700 yards. I really don't think the bullet will stay stable beyond that. It's not that big of a round so for it to be a hunting rifle I don't use much more than a 3-10
For a target rifle I Change scope out to a larger scope.

Or

Something x 12 swaro

Or bushnell lrhs

With that short and sweet set up I would take weight and length into account so it doesn't look stupid either. A vx 3 in 4.5x14 maybe.

I am going to limit hunting to 300 yds for them but will let them shoot further on steel etc. I built it off a savage varmint action that has been everything from 223, 22/250, 243, 300 blk and 308. I got the bolt head online somewhere and 7.62x39 magazine direct from savage (not easy to find). Have only fired 123 SST factory ammo so far but I will reload later. My creedmoor killed quite a few deer with the 129sst. I have handful of scopes that I can choose from but wanted to hear what others like. I will consider each of them. My budget will increase as I sell off more rifles but it is a kids gun, not a competion rifle so reliable and bright is a requirement but don't need a ton of features.

My son's two rifles have a VX-2 3-9x40 and a Meopro 3.5-10x44. The Meopta replaced a Fullfield II 3-9x40 that he did just fine with, for hunting.

A friend of mine hooked me up with Athlon Talos BTR 4-14. I will compare it to the other scopes I have and give some feedback. Sure a lot of scope for less than $250 dealer. I'm sure I can find something wrong with it.

Sounds like a good one for them, let us know what you think of that scope.

I will. Very sceptical after reading the reviews. I can compare it to a few bushnell elite tacticals, an XRS, Viper pst ffp, and an shv. Nothing like a blogger review but I will let y'all know where I find flaws in this scope. Anyone have a suggestion for quality/budget 30mm rings. I've spent $300 for 30mm rings and I've bought utg's for $20. Any input on good value reliable rings?

SWFA's house brand rings work well for less than $40.

Pick the height needed. Here is a link to the medium height.
