I'm looking to buy my first spotting scope and I'm trying to decide between straight or angled. I'm going on a mountain mule deer hunt in New Mexico this year and that's my main reason to purchase. I have wanted one for years though, for sighting in rifles and I would like to use it in my box blind here in Texas. Which do you prefer and why? Angled seems better with a small tripod for glassing canyons, but straight seems better for use in the blind.

Straight for me.

It packs easier.

More importantly it's easier for me to scan with both eyes. A target or an animal I "map it". 2 o'clock from the cedar, 6 o'clock from the little cliff, as an example. Turn down the magnification (if it's not fixed) rotate, and pan the scope to the area with my non-dominant eye helping, until I get the spotter looking at the correct area. With an angled scope, that non-dominant eye is looking at the ground in front of your feet, not helping at all.

Straight for me too. It's much easier for me to acquire targets with the straight.

Thanks guys,Fireman your point makes sense. I was leaning toward straight and I think y'all just got me off the fence.

Straight-
1)easier to use out of truck and blind
2)NM has very little true high country like you see on TV.
3) angledd takes time to master the see with binos then look down and find with SS, reverse is true also

Straight: easier to acquire target, attach to blind, attach to truck window, easier to pack
Angled: good for range work, laying prone only moving head by angling scope, etc, long range scouting high up

Have Leupold Gold Ring HD 12-40x60 I could probably part with won't be using much this season if interested.

I prefer straight. Just more intuitive to use, especially if you don't live behind a spotting scope. And easier to pack as said above.

But many swear by angled. Most cited reason is more comfort in certain positions.

Angled. I don't have much problem getting on target with an angled. I believe the angled is more versatile once you play around with it. I rarely use my eyepiece in the 12 o'clock position especially out of a vehicle. It does suck putting in a pack as my Eberlestock spotting scope pocket is made for straight spotters. I can see I'm in the minority here though.

Thanks for the advice and thanks for the offer DRD11. I ordered the standard leupold 15-45x60 kit from cabelas yesterday.
