We have pigeon-sized doves in Alpine that hoot and coo throughout most of the year. My favorite part about dove season is to finally get a chance to shoot a few the noisy things.

There's no such thing as a skinny cat in Alpine... They hunt and eat the doves.

Sometimes my wife will point out a pair of them mating, and I'll say, "Those effing doves!"

I had to quit smoking quite a while back, after a bout with pneumonia. - I smoked two packs a day for twenty-something years. Strangely enough, quitting was not hard at all. I had half a carton in the closet for several months, and finally gave them away.

The doves here make a call that sounds a lot like "Hoot hoo and hoot!"... I would guess that it is the males trying to attract females, or establish territory... In any case, at times you can hear dozens of them at a time. After a while, the charm wears off and I wind up rooting for the cats that eat them.

Chuck Hawks calls the new style "euro-trash" styling... I think he has hit the nail on the head with that comment. If that is modern, then call me a throwback.

Alpine has its charm, and it has its drawbacks too. I like it better than the other places I've been. Being a small desert town, Alpine has lots of odd characters... When I moved my family in here, it just made things worse.

This is the only shotgun I will shoot the rest of my life. It served Dad all his life and it is the only one I care to shoot anymore. 1956 Belgian Light Twelve. Nothing has ever felt as right to me as this one does.

The first time I ever shot that Browning, it was probably 1979...

We always hunted dove, back then it was about all we could afford. The smell of sunflowers, ragweed, and spent shotgun shells will always have a special place in my heart. We would eat vienna sausage with cheese and crackers, and every now an then take a sip out of the water jug.

I sure do miss dove hunting with dad.

What I love about dove hunting? It's the fast action. I've been a terrible wingshot over the years, but I think I get better every season, and especially since in inherited my dad's old Remington 17. I love that old shotgun.

This young man is what I love about dove (or any type of) hunting.

Pay it forward - Kids are the future.

Rifles are similar to boats and young women...there's no end to how much money you can pour into them without making them any more useful.
