One of our cameras got switched to video accidently about a month ago and while going through the vids I noticed that one young buck looked different from the rest. From the shoulders back he looks like a normal whitetail but his head and neck are a darker brown. He also has no discernible throat patch and a dark stripe going down the back on his neck. Basically it looks like his top half doesn't go with his bottom half. If his whole body was like that I'd say he was melanistic but it also looks like he might have some mulie mixed in him. This is in Kent county east of 70 right on the edge of mulie country. We've never seen a mule deer on this property but have seen them up on the hwy within 2 miles of here. I'm not sure if those are mulie antlers he's growing or just a strange looking rack but there again he is easy to spot from the other young bucks.

Here's a quick video I made putting some of the clips together. What do you guys think?

I'm not really seeing what you are saying, looks pretty normal to me. When the sun was shining on him I can't see any color difference, maybe it's just the shade or his winter coat coming through?

Yeah, you're probably right. He doesn't look as discolored in August as he did July. Still something weird looking about this deer though. Doesn't seem to have all the typical white markings that you see on the neck, nose and ears. I probably should've included some of the other young bucks for comparison.

Here's a doe that exhibits some of the same characteristics. Notice how much darker the one in the middle is than the other two? Especially on the insides of her legs and belly.

I think they just vary quite a bit, every year on my place it seems we have a buck or two that are dang near blond. Also some will have all white legs or double throat patch or small throat patch. I had one buck hang around for a few years with an all black tail and another mature buck that still had spots on the back half of his body.

Did they keep the same colorations from year to year once you noticed them? Definitely makes them easy to spot and I'm thinking that guy will make a cool looking mount in 3-4 years.

For the most part yea, though I've seen some get a little darker as they age

We've got a young buck on the ranch that has a black stripe down his back about 3 inches wide and a black tail with like a triangle of white at the top. Can certainly spot him from any other.

Almost like a whitetail mated with a sika
