Does anyone hunt out of tripods in west Texas? I've never used them, but am looking at something light and easy to move being its our first year on the lease. Just worried about the wind firstly and also being skylined by the deer since there are no tree lines to blend in with.

Tripods are all I've ever bow hunted out of until last year. I've always hunted out west, and there wasn't a tree big enough for a tree stand within a hundred miles. Just find a tall mesquite or a nice cedar to tuck it in, and you'll be fine. If the cover is too sparse in the winter, just drape some camo netting around the backside if you're bow hunting (you'll have to remove the front braces), or wrap it all the way around if you're rifle hunting. As far as stability, that's on you. You have to level and anchor it properly. I feel much more comfortable and secure in a tripod than a tree stand. But like I said, that's what I'm used to.

Planning on anchoring it good. There's nothing over probably 7' tall on the whole place. Was planning on doing the full wrap around just wasn't sure on the sky lining deal. From the looks of the pictures everything from your chest up sticks out like a sore thumb with nothing behind you but blue skys

Are you bow or rifle hunting? I wouldn't worry too much about my top half being sky lined at rifle distances, as long as you're not doing jumping jacks in the stand. Just be aware of your movement when you raise your binoculars or rifle. The deer will get accustomed to that tripod the same as a box blind, and won't pay much attention to it as long as you don't give them a reason to. If you're bow hunting, it's a totally different mind set. If you're real worried about it, a pop up ground blind wouldn't be a bad choice. As portable as it gets, and all the concealment you need.

Used to hunt out of one myself and just backed it into the tallest bushes around. Had deer walk within 5 feet of the base and never knew I was looking at them. Had windy days where my scent had to be carried over the deer, cause they would walk down wind only feet away and not spook.

WInd and cold are probably your most pressing worries. Having a tarp wrapped around the tripod is a good idea, as it would help on both wind and cold. Tripods are easy and fast to move. Just stick them in the middle of the tallest bunch of trees. Better than being on the ground for sure.

I have hunted tripod stands in West Texas and they are great for rifle hunting and getting to see a vast area in land with dense mesquite/cedar. Even without vegetation as tall as the tripod, I have had deer pass within 10 yards with no issue. That being said, they are not much fun on windy days or when you are sitting in one or when a cow decides to scratch itself on one of the legs while you are in it.

Thanks everyone. My plan is to put a piece of 1/4" treated plywood in the floor and put some kind of wrap around on it to the shooting rail. Will be used for rifle hunting only.

No livestock on the place haha

If you can find a used strong built they were pretty good. Where do you live? I recommend getting a quad pod. Academy sells one that's about 8' tall I think. Price is ok. I think $269. But I've heard it's hard to put together and the quality is not so good. Monarch feeders out of Arlington,Tx. has a better one but it's pricey. $600+. There is a place I found on Craigslist in McKinney, Tx. that sells tripods and quads. They look the best to me price and quality.

USMC89 I wouldn't hunt a tripod it is to damn cold and to windy. You will be shaking to much to hold a good aim on anything. Plus your going to stick out like a turd in a punch bowl.

No worries with being chilled while bow hunting, but it can be miserable hunting tripods late season on windy days.

Have hunted out of one a few times. As long as the deer are not too close, they don't seem to mind, being still helps a lot.

Cold weather/windy/rainy hunts can be miserable, and early season hunts when its hot can get you a sunburn.

I picked up hunting tripods from a buddy of mine. Some of them swear by wearing cammo and some swear by a faded pair of blue jeans and a lite blue shirt to try and match the sky. Ive tried both and they both work, but you will probably still get busted every so often.

You can't wrap it cause the wind will tear it up. I bowhunt year round in Rule. I wire the mesquite behind me with cedar breaches and build up the natural cover. It works great. Deer are clueless. It's cold in December but I layer merino wool and I do fine. If you wrap a tarp around a tripod you'll be surprised how tore up it'll get. That wind is powerful

I would recommend a pop up instead. Easier to move around with and much more comfortable when it gets cold and windy. up

Wanted to thank everyone for the opinions wound up getting me a few of the game winner quad pods with the enclosure. I think it's going to work. Should be more stable and keep the wind off.

That looks like a good choice if your not moving it around and the enclosure will be very valuable on cold windy days. I would probably outdoor carpet down on the floor to keep it quiet and more importantly warm. Also don't leave those enclosures on for long periods of time or the wind will tear them to pieces. up
