Talk to someone who owns a DD, the breeder is supposed to have a number tattooed in the ear. They should know where to get it done. Chip is probably easier to get done though
There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Chip does no good unless who ever finds dog takes it to a vet that HAS a chip reader. Tattoo is best. Say to do, you can order a tattoo press from a livestock supply and put the info in. It would be better if you could get a vet to do it so he could give the dog a local anesthesia.

A well fitted name tag on the collar is a good start. I lost Cracker in south Texas. The rancher called me from his truck.

I"Ve had a LOT of dogs and I would not know to look in the inner rear leg for ID. In fact I have never heard of tattooing there. I'd check the collar first, then the chip.

Yeah I've got her chipped and collar on. I'd like to get the dog tattooed. My wife let her out this am w out her collar on and she got out of the gate. Luckily we found her. I travel so anything extra helps. I'd make my wife run away if I came home and my dog was gone.

I've still got a tattoo press somewhere we used to tattoo the inner lips of horses, might be a little big for a dog ear, though.

People naturally look inside the ears of dogs they find for ticks. I cant imagine that there is anyone on here that doesnt check their dogs ears on a normal basis. We uust dont think of it. I have chipped two dogs and lost both ( at the same time). Called the chip hotline and wa as told only about 15 -20% of chipped dogs are recovered. Vets do not check to see if a dog iss chipped unless asked too.

I'd think the inside of the ear would be better? I've never even though to check the inner leg for ID. Often though if people are petting a dog they'll play with the ears and probably have a much better chance of finding your info there. I know there's no way I'd try and get a look under a dogs leg if I didn't know the dog but if it's letting me pet it's head I may flip an ear over...
My wife used to tattoo all here rabbits inside the ear.
She ordered the whole kit to do it herself online for like $50 or so. Might be worth looking into?

I've seriously considered this on my black lab, but figured some of the internet activists out there might not take kindly.

With all the info you're wanting, a livestock tattoo gun isn't going to get it done. They're 5 digits max and you're going to run out of ear before you get it done. It won't work on inside of the leg either.
You'd need a legit tattoo guy to do it. You're also going to need a vet also to sedate/anesthetize the dog.
That's assuming you can convince a tattoo guy and a vet to agree to the procedure.
I'd go with a microchip and well fitted collar. When you get the chip, you'll get a collar tag that also has the chip info on it. I've never had my dogs slip their collar off.
Look up Gun dog supply. Buy a collar and they'll ship it to you with a imprinted brass plate. All of mine have one. Great company.

I've got the gun dog supply collar with the brass plate and love it.
So much better than the nylon collars I'd had. They don't fade and the brass is still easy to read.
