I had a few days off this week and was able to spend them at the ranch in Junction. I have been wanting a nice blackbuck for a few years and have passed up many opportunities for various reasons, not the least of which was my youngest daughter shooting my blackbuck 2 years ago
Tuesday night I sat in an elevated blind with the crossbow and saw 4 trophy males within 400 yds, but only one 16" range male would come within range. 2 of them spent an hour fighting on the other side of a brush line, but out of sight to me
Wed morning brought more of the same thing, then about 8:15 when one of the bigger ones came in and was promptly run off by the 16" guy he stopped on the other side of some trees where he and I could not see one another. I got out of the blind and took my 6.8 AR with me and set out on foot to put a stalk on him. I covered about 75 yds of the distance to him when he got nervous and started grunting and making a bunch of noise. He knew something was up and I thought it was me.
then over my right shoulder I hear and see 15 hogs run right by me on their way to the feeder i was hunting at. They passed within 15 yds of me.
I was able to take a few steps around the big oak I was near and out of their vision, when the Blackbuck decided to walk back into view for me under a line of trees and about 50 yds away. One shot to the heart and he took off on a short run before piling up.
after I calmed down from the shot, I walked back around the stand of oaks and was surprised to see the sounder of hogs still attacking the feeder. I was able to line up two of them and hit them both in the head with one shot...
all in all, a heck of a great day at the ranch by myself
