For some reason I dread sighting in my rifle for hunting season.

Bought a new 6.8 and nikon P223 scope, bought ammo, just can't time find time to make it a priority.

I don't hate sighting in rifles, just dread it for some reason...

Just me?

I enjoy it. Especially when I can do it in two rounds.

Mail it to me. smile

Maybe it's because it takes me two boxes to get it sighted in...

Quick method I use: (1) use as big of a target as you can get (2) Shoot at the bullseye (3) Observe the POI then while holding on the bullseye adjust your scope to match the POI. That should save some ammo and get you very close, you can fine tune from there with one or two more shots.

I don't hate sighting in my rifles. It's sighting in my slug gun that bothers me. It might have something to do with the recoil being roughly equivalent to a 338 Win Mag. Checking my zero with my favorite slug is fine, but if they're unavailable, finding a replacement is a grind.

I sight mine in at 25 yds 1 1/2 low des center and then go to 100 yds and get it sighted in for my 100 yd zero. Gets me close at 100 then only have an adjustment or two to get to dead center.

I love sighting it. Mainly because I know it will outshoot everybody else on the range peep

the only thing more satisfying than
sighting in is checking zero and foul
shots for the upcoming season and knowing
that first cold bore shot will absolutely
irrefutably go right where i point it.

It makes a difference on what you have available for sighting in. I use a led sled. Holding the rifle still and in the exact same position is crucial to making sighting in easy and quick.

When sighting in a new set up I remove the bolt and look down the barrel and position an object in the middle of the barrel sight. I'm doing this while I have my rifle tightly cradled in the led sled. Then I look through the scope and set the cross hairs to the same object. Now I'm ready to shoot. I usually send only two down if they group. Now, while the rifles has not moved at all in the led sled, I chase the 2 shot grouping with my cross hairs. I wait a good 10 minutes or more before shooting another group.

If the wind isn't blowing, I can accomplished this in less than 20 minutes or so. if I shoot additional groups, I let the barrel cool for another 10 minutes between shots. Shooting a hot barrel will just frustrate your efforts.

The only part I hate about sighting in is the other people at the range. I try to go on a weekday and be waiting at the door when they open. That or I'll go to a friends land and zero it there.

If I cannot get it done in two rounds or less then there is something wrong with the optics or the gun.

You raise a good point. I always check my scope mounts prior to sighting in.

I hate sighting in a 223 with a 1-6 scope.

First sighting in isn't bad except for waiting between shots for the barrel to cool down. If I am checking the zero on a rifle, then I will take 4 or 5 rifles and check them all so there's something to do while waiting for the barrel to cool down. Shoot each one once and then shoot them all a second time.
