For a hunting round (30-06) what would you consider to be min muzzle velocity with a 165 gr? Shots would be less that 300 yds.

I'd say it depends on what bullet you're using. Some, like the LR Accubond, are supposed to open up at impact velocities as low as 1300 fps. Others will require more (or possibly less) impact velocity to perform as intended.

I would work backwards and figure out, at 300 yards, what MV I would need to deliver a 165 grain projectile that will have at least 1,000 pounds of energy? Then you need to make darned sure that you can deliver that bullet, at that range, within a circle about the size of a pie plate. Placement, placement, placement! You'll have to play around with this chart a bit to make it make sense, but basically it says that at an MV of 2840fps, this particular bullet would release 1860 foot pounds of energy on the target it contacted. So you can do some extrapolation and work back on the MV to get you to 1,000 to 1,500 ft. pounds, which is generally considered to be an acceptable energy level to assure a humane kill. Assuming the bullet hits in the right place!

Just curious, why make a .30-06 drop down to below normal .308 Win velocities?

I use Nosler 165 ballistic tip in my 30/06 since the mid 80. I Have a mv of 2840. I have gotten Spectacular killing. These were designed for long range hunting for western game believe me that they will expand reliably.

What exactly are you asking? And what specific bullet are we talking about?

A bit of caution is necessary. If you reduce some powder levels too low you can have a problem. Too much air space between the powder and the base of the bullet can cause excessive pressures. Don't go below the levels listed in you reloading manual.

I would like to know what would be a reliable mv out of a 22" 06 with a 165 Accubond. I have seen several load data books and mv varies greatly. I want to be assured that I will get good expansion up to 250 yds. Thanks

If you push the 165 AB at 2850 fps, I'm showing about 2355 fps at 250 yards. If you look at the Nosler link below, they post up a picture of the AB expansion down to 1800 fps. As velocity drops, so will expansion. My rule of thumb for reliable expansion is 2200 fps. This picture shows it down to 1800, with some expansion. I think you will fine at 2850 fps muzzle velocity with a 165 AB. Practice at those distances and work on good shot placement, and the bullet will do it's job. http://www.nosler.com/accubond-bullet/ Range Velocity Energy (yards) (ft/sec) (ft-lbs) 0 2850 2975.7 25 2797.8 2867.7 50 2746.2 2763 75 2695.3 2661.4 100 2644.9 2562.9 125 2595.2 2467.4 150 2546 2374.8 175 2497.5 2285.1 200 2449.5 2198.1 225 2402.1 2113.9 250 2355.3 2032.3 275 2309 1953.3 300 2263.3 1876.8 325 2218.1 1802.5 350 2173.3 1730.3 375 2128.8 1660.3 400 2084.9 1592.5

Daniel Sounds like you're overthinking it. Assuming that you're not loading it down for lower recoil etc. for a recoil sensitive shooter, any standard load from any reloading manual using a 165 gr. bullet will have more than enough MV & energy to deliver appropriate expansion with a 165 AB. Even starting loads. 250 yards is nothing for an '06, it's still cooking at 250. If you're trying to load it way down intentionally for other reasons, that's a different matter. Doable, but different. Otherwise, there should be no reason for concern until you get much further out.

Daniel What is wrong with loading it at higher velocity? You get much more expansion and shock.

Strongbad, you may be right. I have plans to take a second 30-06 as a back up, either for me or for the wife. Her primary rifle will be a 7x57AI with 150's and I don't want to load up with loads that she may be hesitant to use if necessary. I will be loading the 06's with 60 gr RL-22 which per Nosler should be 28oo or so. Outfitter said there will not be any long shots, 200 max according to him. Thanks for the information Chad & Strongbad.
