I've been hunting 3 years in a row now in Shleicher county usually the 1st 10 days of Dec. we've killed several mature bucks over the last 3 years 4 1/2 plus. With the average gross of about 110"-118" or so. It doesn't really matter if there 8pts or 10pts the seem to score about the same. My question being is this about par for the course? Seems a lil low to me but not being from the area I'm not sure. I would have thought we would have killed 1 or 2 pushing 130 by now.

When we hunted Schleicher county years ago we'd regularly see bucks in the 130's and they got a pass. We had 4 guns on 2600 acres so we could manage it and be selective. Unfortunately the landowner passed away and his wife that was 30 years his junior decided that she was going to package hunt the place for the extra money. I'm sure that our management efforts lasted all of a year or two at the most. Last I heard you'd be hard pressed to find a buck over 110"on that ranch.

I've been hunting the same ranch in Northern Schleicher county for more than 20 years and we regularly see 3.5 yr olds pushing 130, and 4.5 yr olds in the mid 130s. We typically kill one 140 class each year. Biggest issue we have is seeing 5.5yr old + bucks. We don't shoot anything younger than 4.5 unless it's a cull but can't say the same about the neighbors around us. While we protien feed year round, it's not enough to drastically effect antler growth.

In that county it's going to really depend on ranch size and neighbors. Parts of schleicher have quite a few smaller over hunted places. I'm up in irion and we are getting our trophy deer to 6.5 and 150+ yearly with good rain. We have couple taken in the 170s and several 160s.

Shooting bucks at 4.5 or even 5.5 and I don't think that will happen. Of course you have to be in a situation where your lease is disciplined and at least have some decent neighbors. We are hunted on one side across the river that shoot every buck that reaches 130" regardless of age. It makes it tough managing that side of the ranch.
