To contact a taxidermist. The guy does great work, but first time I'm using him for a shoulder mount.
I dropped my buck off in early June with my taxidermist's wife. Gave her the details and watched her write what I wanted on the tag. Put a little less than 50% down. She didn't give me a time frame as I didn't ask.
Is a call to check on status inappropriate or too soon?

I'd call and get a timeframe and then leave him alone until that date.

I would not call to "check on status" after 2 months. If I were going to call I would call only for a timeframe and mention the reason for asking was because you forgot to ask when dropping it off.
As a taxidermist I would give a couple rules for contacting an honest reputable taxidermist that has your buck.
1. If he gives you a timeframe... Don't call to check the status if that timeframe has not passed. 2. If the timeframe has passed and you want to check in do so understanding that it is impossible to be 100% accurate on timeframe when you have so many projects going (although a timeframe should be reasonably close)
It has been my experience that the guys who call many times to "check in" are the ones who are slow to pick (or don't pick up) Their mount when it is finished. Which sends red flags to me.
Just my opinion.

I will never "push" my Taxi...
He will call when it's ready.

Being that it is the OPs first time using this taxidermist, this is what I would do if it was me. I always like to know what to expect

Funny thing about taxidermist. The really good ones have a long wait time because they are so busy. If your taxidermist is one of the good ones, he is having the hide tanned at a commercial tannery. This could take a couple months just to get the hide back. Normally he will send a lot of them at the same time to cut down on shipping, and they will send them back all at the same time to cut down on shipping. Six months is a pretty good turn around for a mount, but a year is about normal.

I always ask for a timeframe when I drop them off. I've been told a month for a euro mount and it took 3 months. stuff happens. For a shoulder mount expect at least 6-8 months. But like others have mentioned if you get a timeframe, then let you taxidermist do there thing and just be patient. A few weeks past that timeframe there's nothing wrong with a polite call to say how excited you are and looking for any updates. My .02
