As of late i have mainly been loading secant ogive projectiles. Imo they seem to give me better 5 shot groups. 3 shot groups there is little difference. Especially in a 1-8" 220 swift and 1-8" 260 rem. Havent even tried the hybrids yet because im pleased with the results.

Tangent seem to be less picky about relation to the lands, so I appreciate that when a barrel was chambered with some free-bore.

Once I finally shoot up my A-Maxes I'll switch over to the Berger hybrid in the 6.5 Creedmoor. But the 7 Rem Mag is tuned for the 180 VLD Hunting, so I'll just stick with it.

The hybrids are less sensitive in distance to the lands and so far seem to have large sweet spots on the ones I have tried. They are more like the Secant ogive bullets in that respect with a little better BC than the standard VLDs.

Unless the loads are for extended range I like Secant bullets. The Tangent in most instances have a higher BC.

Actually, tangent ogive bullets are your more common plain jane bullets. The Secant bullets are the VLD type with the more aggressive ogive that is more sensitive to seating depth.

A typical tangent ogive bullet would be like a 168 grain Sierra Matchking. It has a nice rounded edge at the ogive that rounds into the bearing surface from the front nose of the bullet. These are also your more common hunting bullets. If I get a rifle that is having issues shooting, I will switch to a tangent ogive bullet to help tighten up the groups some, or if I need to seat the bullet deep in the case to fit in a magazine.

A Secant ogive bullet would be like a Berger VLD design, where the ogive makes a more abrupt corner at the ogive of the bullet. These are the bullets that are more sensitive to seating depth. (How I remember this is, the S in secant and the S in straight. The front angle of the bullet goes straight into the bearing surface with no smooth transition.)

I prefer Secant, or VLD designs, since I like the higher BC. But I'll make a tangent ogive bullet shoot good, too. It just depends on my application.

I prefer secant personally, but I also like big heavy high BC bullets.

Application dependant but tangent takes less work which means more range time. When in a hybrid the bc is typically higher too which is a best of both worlds. The Hornady advertise as a secant but load more like a tangent in my experience.
