Depends on what you're planting. Wheat, in my experience you'll want to wait and plant on moisture. Oats, you can dust in immediately after disking and wait for the rain to come. Anything else, I'd check the bag. As for timing, depending on the heat it'll more likely be late September. If the heat breaks notably before then and we get some rain, I'd plant anytime after Sept 1.

I'm going to try to mow my food plot this weekend if it's not too wet. I usually disk a couple times during September and plant the first week of october. It all depends on how much moisture is in the ground.

I mowed last weekend, I wait two weeks and spray, then a week and disc, then another week and disc again, then plant oats and pea's between Sept 15 - October 1st and pray for rain. This has always worked well for me as long as I am in the north central texas area. And as ,QuitShootingYoungBucks said, you can dust in oats and they will just lay in the ground waiting for the rain.

I got caught by the rain right after I spread 150# of food plot mix. I didn't get to cover it but more than 5" fell and its supposed to rain all week. I hope the seed doesn't float away.

I mowed and disced this weekend after a bit of rain. There has been a lite rain all day today . up It will get another discing and seeded mid September, hopefully prior to another rain.

Similar to Mr. T, I disked mine back in July, I sprayed weekend before last. I'll disc Labor Day weekend if it is dry and then watch the weather towards the end of September. I disk one more time before I plant and then plant the same or next day before rain is forecasted. I like to plant late September to mid-October.

It's going to depend on a couple factors to get the soil correct for planting. Moisture is the main key. I usually disc after a good rain as soon as you can get in the field. This is a good practice as it helps break up big chucks you get when the soil is too dry. We mostly have big fields so we disc, seed, and drag at the same time but you can do the same with smaller plots and smaller implements if you have the time. Otherwise you can disc and then seed and drag if necessary within a day or 2. Planting time depends mostly on rain unless you can irrigate but most plant in late September.

Pretty much the same as the fellas have posted. I shredded my plots last week when it was so hot and dry, now they are a mulched, brown looking mes. During or after this cool front and associated moisture, I will disc as much into the ground as possible. I will also "try" to plant the 1st-2nd week of Sept, but I will shoot for prior to rain. I have had to plant the 2nd week of Oct in 2011 as it was so dry, then I left for an Elk hunt.

In any event, I will have everything I need ready to go by the 1st of Sept, sometimes you find out just a day in advance you may be lucky and get some rain.

Fall food plots that I am not going to plant for spring/summer plots I shred as they mature and dry up and plow as soon I can. That way I have moisture falling onto bare ground to be stored for the fall plots. If it is a plot I replanted in spring/summer then I will shred them after the deer eat them down and wait a week for the slash to dry out. Then plow them under. I did that 3 weeks ago. Caught about 1.5" of rain 2 days after shredding then waited a few days to plow all under. I have now had about .80" more rain on the tilled ground. Should be ready to plant (after the next rains if I get any) in late Sept.

Weather permitting, I mow first. Two weeks later when the new growth is well established I spray with Round Up or other grass and weed killer. After another two weeks (sometimes longer) I disk, drag to prepare a flat seedbed, and then broadcast seed, mixing seed and fertilizer in a pull behind spreader. Then I drag again with the same harrow used to prepare the seed bed after disking.

We have mainly wheat fields. Do you always mow before disc plowing? We have been told not to worry about mowing/shredding that we should be able to just disc everything down and it will be good.

You only need to mow if the disk won't turn it under. A small, light 5' disk will have a hard time with a field full of 1-2' tall weeds. A heavy 12-14' Sunflower offset will rip just about anything with a good tractor pulling it.

IMO, it depends on how you want the plot to look during the season. I prefer to mow first for two reasons. First, it reduces the amount of live growth that can otherwise make it more difficult to disk. This is also why I wait at least two weeks after spraying to disk. It gives the grass and weeds more time to die and decay so the disk will cut better. Otherwise, your disk may have a hard time cutting through tall, green vegetation. Secondly, mowing seems to lead to more effective spraying a couple weeks later when the new growth is better able to absorb the herbicide. IMO, mowing first leads to a cleaner and better looking plot.

Can you disk and plant all in the same day? Absolutely. But the plot will show it. Still, if your lease is a long drive away, that may be your best and only option.

I don't disc or plow. Spray plot with glyphosate - a week or two later throw seed and fertilizer in standing dead vegetation, the cut to lay thatch over seed (or use a drag or roller to lay the dead stuff down.

You might consider trying this method on one of your small plots, or on a section of a large plot to compare results. You may become a "no till" convert.

Here's a video that pretty well shows the process.

Looks like I'm going to have a good start this year. We have had nearly 9" of rain since Saturday between Calvert and Franklin. The ranch hand has been dumping the rain gauge every morning and keeping track of each day. I was there for the first 5+. Started that way last year and couldn't get in to really work the fields. this year just because, we started early. Good thing. If it rains like last year at least I got the seed down and I hope it will be sprouting by the weekend if it hasn't washed away.

I mowed my plots a couple of weeks ago. With all the rain in the sand here I went ahead and turned my plots over yesterday. I won't plant till around mid sept to late depending on rain but turning them now sure makes it a lot easier to plant at that time.

What kind of sprayers do you all use? I plant a couple of acres and need something simple/cheap to help spray. Thanks.

I've never sprayed ... merely shred short, disc several weeks before planting, disc again immediately before planting, spread seed, drag to slightly cover (or birds will eat all or most of your seeds within a few days)...
