Put the shot in the CNS, be it from a high shoulder shot, neck shot or brain shot and they will not go anywhere but down. On those same shots miss that CNS a little they can go a long way and it all depends on the shot, some will die while others will not.

I would hope so. In fact, you should be able to do that with FMJ for much cheaper. All shooting in the ear hole does is shot that the bullet can penetrate, but doesn't really mean it is a good hunting bullet in general. Your bullet is a good hunting bullet, excellent expander, only brain shots just don't need expansion to be effective for dropping animals readily.

Heck, I used to use 5.56 green tip penetrator ammo and make brain shots. Worked like a charm, but weren't great on body shots. Sometimes they zipped right through. Sometimes they made gawdawful nasty exit wounds. Performance varied, alot when shooting the body.

I use the 62gr green tip because of the price. I've had similar results to what your saying.

I understand the price considerations. I reload and typically use Hornady bullets 'cuz they're often slightly cheaper. But, I always use an expanding type hunting bullet. The cost isn't that great, and the actual ammo cost is really insignificant compared to the other expenses of hunting.

You mentioned a suppressor and hearing the bullet hit the hog, so are you shooting sub-sonic rounds? I'm surprised this hasn't been asked yet. Much less velocity of course if you are.

I have had good luck with the 300BO with Barnes and Hornady expanding rounds, but have had a few run off. I think these were probably due to bad shot placement. I killed one last night and it dropped immediately with a high shoulder shot that may have hit the spine. I normally aim for the heart behind the shoulder, but after reading this thread, I think I'll try neck shots for a while and see how it goes.

I'm sitting in my RV now, waiting for the motion sensor to go off so I can get one more pig in the ice chest...Wish me luck...

Ok, good luck.

I was not using subsonic. I have upgraded my ammo to a Nosler tip from Chad. Already been to the range to dial it in, and can't wait for the 3 day weekend coming up.

Just to follow up on my post in Sep, I have now shot at least 5 hogs aiming at the neck, a few inches down from the top. Every one has dropped in it's tracks. Works great and I'll never aim at heart/lung again. Ammo is 300BO expanding.

So, how'd it go?

Those things are just tough. U gotta hit em neck or further forward for em to drop. If they start trying to get up, hit em again. Earlier this spring I hit about a 200lb sow with a 300 WSM in the shoulder. Absolutely blew a leg off. Then it jumped up and ran off. Unbelievable. THEN...it came back to the feeder again about an hour later to eat...Dragging the front leg. Hit it again near the neck but still not a perfect shot and she ran AGAIN. Eventually found her and felt like I owed her a proper burial for being so tough hahaha

Barnes are great bullets. Chad can reload you some awesome rounds too. But either way, hit em in the neck and they should drop. Just be ready to shoot again if they even so much think about getting up.
