Have a small place we've been feeding corn for several years. Thing of adding a protein feeder to get more deer in. Any thoughts on whether it's too late to start that?

We feed it year round. I also mix it with my corn. About 3 to 1 ratio. It may be too late to be much a nutritional boost antler wise but it will help your lactating doe and draw in deer that aren't too interested in corn.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Never too late. You will not get any benefit for antlers this year. All deer will benefit from it though and improve their body condition going into the winter. It may also attract more deer to your property. Some on here feed year round. If you have the ability to plant winter plots, those can be cheaper and provide the same benefits as protein.

agree with above, I would start mixing it with corn to get them on it before you go fill a feeder.

good luck

Never to late to help the deer growth, plus you might get more COOOONS LOL. I do like using the gravity feed type versus a spinner.

I feed year round, it helps in their nutrients and it helps as a attractant.

Most any pellet protein will work just be aware if it is humid , the protein may stick together and sometimes clog at the funnel.

If its in a spin feeder mix it light with corn so it doesn't clog.

I stop feeding protein in Sept., go to all corn. Once it gets really cold, they start looking for carbs. I start back with corn/protein in March

I feed free choice protein year round. Corn heavier in fall and winter and not as much in antler/fawn periods of hotter months. Bucks will hammer the protein pre-rut. I have seen them walk over corn to get to a protein feeder in my experience once they are on protein for a while. I like the fawns being able to get to protein as quick as they can. Those buck fawns raised around a feeder will stay closer to home and being larger bodied in the future. They will know where the feeder is when they need the feed. During the antler growing season and into archery season my feeders have mainly if not all bucks at them. When I start to road feed and turn up the corn feeder volume in Sept is when I start to see more does. I also do food plots.

We feed it all year long and the deer eat it all year long.

Do any of yall have issues with the protein clogging up the feeder when you mix it with corn? I have always been told it'll clog it up, but I've never tried it personally..

I've had it clog up with a normal spinner plate as I believe the protein will swell as it sits on the spinner plate. Haven't tried it, but I bet the Eliminator Plate would help keep moisture down since the feed will be fully contained inside the barrel confused2

I've only fed it through a spin feeder a few times and it was the middle of summer. Luckily my places are close enough I can make weekly trips and I just pour it on the ground or sometimes use a protein feeder.

Once they start eating it they wont let it plug up. Iv used it with corn but like just putting strait protein in it and hand tossing corn around and under and even putting some in the spout.. usually all it takes and they do the rest from there.

any time is a good time to start

To see the benefits of protein. It takes several years. You also have I account for the deer's age. That being said, protein definitely helps but to see the real benefits, it would require a deer to eat protein year round until they are mature (5+).

Use the water resistant antler max. Never has clogged in my feeder.just make sure that it doesn't leak.

your only focusing on one benefit.... since I been using protein mostly free choice feeding imo has abled me to see three times the deer in a sit that I usually do

This is right. Only use a protein pellet in a spincast feeder if the pellets are treated to be water resistant and if the feeder does not leak. Even then, I only mix 50/50 or less with corn. Untreated pellets will swell from mere humidity and clog and sour in a spincast feeder. Ask me how I know.

I've only had one issue when using pellets. This occurred when I didn't mix it with corn. Otherwise, I've been good to go. I typically use 1:2 ratio for protein and corn in the feeder using a spinner. I typically do this year round, with the exception of this year. I couldn't get out to the lease until end of July. So I expect there to be some impact to the antler growth this year.

We have had times ,mid season ,where they get a little pressured and start feeding at the protein feeders at night, so we just shut them down till the deer start cooperating again.

It's the only issue we have ever noticed feeding it year round.
