There is an area in one of my food plots that hogs keep destroying every year. They root deep holes as if they're digging for something that only exists in that small area because the do little rooting in the rest of the plot. It's the same area, year after year, and until now, I always go back and work it with a box blade and disk to get it ready to plant.

Because of the wear and tear it takes on my tractor to get the area back in shape, this year plan is to spray the area and plant something that I can just "throw and grow", or rake in by hand.

Anyone have a suggestion on what to plant, or perhaps doing something different. Again, I'm just tired of going back every year to clean up the mess.

Trap the hogs..... If they dig up that area seems like a good place for a trap...

Is that spot the only place that you till or disc every year? Hogs wil flock to any place that they smell fresh dirt. I see this all the time with the customers I have that I consult for or plant for. You likely will not completely get rid of them but you might try plowing another spot up close by that they can find and it may help limit some of the traffic on your food plot. We have a product called Max Attract that is a great fall plot mix and it will sustain some heavy traffic and might have a better chance of surviving for you.

I disk and plant the entire plot every Fall, but the hogs just seem to prefer to root the same area within it. They always leave the rest of the plot alone for the most part, which is why I'm thinking to leave that area as is and quit wasting my time repairing the damage when it comes to plant.

I wonder if you spread muslim blood on it if they would stay away.

Just throw out a bag of clover seed in that area and drive over it a few times with the tractor as your dealing with the rest of your plot

That's some pretty strange behavior! There must be some kind of mineral release close enough to the surface to keep bringing 'em back year after year, to the precise, same spot. You have nothing to loose by leaving the area untouched and letting them have their way with it. As mentioned, it may be an ideal place for a trap, and a pretty good site for an ambush some evening!

Soil/moisture different in a low spot that attracts more grubs.

Yes, this is the lowest and least sandy area of the plot. If you were to rope it off, you would find deep rooting in the same roped off area, year after year.

It would be a good test ground for demonstrating how hogs can smell specific worms or grubs deep in ground.

Good suggestion. I'll spray the area first and then seed it when I plant the rest of the plot. Then I'll just drag it without mowing or disking.

I don't think I would change anything. If the hogs only hit a couple of areas and let the rest alone, I'd like to have that problem.

One year my dad went over board on our plot and planted about an acre of turnips. The deer would go in there and eat the greens, but the hogs would only root around the perimeter. I said if we were growing turnips for sale the hogs probably would've eaten every one.
